can't update to 5.0.418?
« on: April 10, 2010, 07:21:50 PM »
(Hope this isn't a duplicate topic, I looked around a bit and threads with similar titles seemed to be having slightly different issues)

So, it looks like my Avast last updated in February.  I'm pretty sure it was set up to update automatically which is why I hadn't really been paying attention to it.

When I go into the Maintenance: Update  section, it tells me there's a new version available.  When I click the "Update Program" button, it briefly says "Updating" and "Initializing" and shows the little progress bar, then almost immediately it stops and goes to this instead:

"Engine and definitions: Already up to date (current version 100228-0)
Program:           Already up to date (current version 5.0.377)
Total time:        1 s
Download time:   1 s
Downloaded files: 0 (0.00 KB)
Server               unknown (unknown)"

When I click "OK" it goes back to the screen that says "Current version: 5.0.377
A new version of the program is available! Latest program version: 5.0.418"

So then I click "Update Program" and the same thing happens again.

As you can all probably tell by now, I'm not extremely computer literate.  I might know a bit more than the stereotypical, entirely ignorant user, but I still need things explained to me in fairly simple terms.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Your avast is way outdated. ;)
Download the latest build here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58183.0
Install it over your old version. If problems occur, post back here.

Yeah, I noticed when I was searching that people seemed to be discussing later versions than .418.

So I can just download and install the new version without uninstalling the old one or anything?

(edit) Ah yes, I see, there is ample explanation within the linked thread.  Thanks!

You are using an old beta/pre-release build of avast, so I would say you should download the latest version and save to your hard disk, uninstall the .377 build and reboot before installing the latest version.

Personally I wouldn't install the pre-release version (unless you accept the risk of using pre-release software), but the current 5.0.462 release, Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and when this pre-release build is finally released then updates from the avastUI (avast user interface) should be possible.
