Socket error 317
« on: July 09, 2004, 11:54:32 AM »
I am having problems with incredimail sending short vidio clips as an attachment . I am using windows 98 SE. my b/band provider suggested I turn off the anti-virus when sending the emails, I tried this it worked once, now it gets to about 44% the the error socket 317 comes up. I do not know what this erro means, and have no idea of where to start to fix it, any assistance would be appreciated, also I am not sure if this is the correct area for this problem...PS this problem of not being able to send the attachments has just started a couple of weeks ago.

If you disable avast! providers from the 'a' blue icon would you be able to send the emails?

If you set avast! to 'not' scan Outbound Mail. Run Mail Protection Wizard and configure 'manually' the account to not be scanned by avast. Would you be able to send the email?

I have just tried both your options, but neither of them worked. the first one got me to 95% then Socket error 317 came up, the second trial only got me to 10% before the Socket error 317 came up........I do not think the problem is in Avast, I have been using Avast for a while now and this problem has only just arrived in the last couple of weeks, unless an update to Avast has caused it. As stated before I do not know the meaning of Socket error 317.  Thanks for you help, any other  ideas would be appreciated...Tony W

I know it's stupid (I hate numbered error codes  >:(  :()
But here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/rpc/rpc/extended_error_information_detection_locations.asp

you can find this crazy message:

Extended Error Information Detection Locations

The following table lists the Extended Error Information detection locations for Windows XP.

Code: 317
Name: WSOpen80
Description and parameters: RPC called ConnectEx but it failed. The error is the original Winsock error code.

Sorry I cannot found more...  :'(

Bob, when I tried to get the url up; it gave me the 317 error again, but after a couple of crashes etc, I managed to find the list of errors, thanks for that info, now what I need to know is what do I need to do to correct this problem, can I run Windows 98 SE over the top of the copy I am using now to pick out the file or whatever is needed, or is there some other way to do it? Sorry to be such a pain, but I am lost in the wilderness.  Thanks Tony W

I think it will be better thing to do now.  8)
Installing over won't lose your data and configuration.
You will need to apply the windows updates (maybe office updates too) again.

I tried again but cannot found anything interesting about that 317 error.  :'(

I have re-installed Windows 98 SE, then tried to send an email, the result was 1% then error 317, I then turned off the "Avast" and tried to send the same email again, it went to 35% then error 317.....It would seem to me that I have big problems, and I do not think that Avast is the main concern, as noted in my first post, the test email was sent and received after much sending (trying to send) etc. I tried to get assistance from the Windows Web Site today, but no luck there, I will try another avenue on Monday, in the morning (our time)...Thanks again for your assistance, it was much appreciated..."Good luck" to both of you....Tony Walker

In the process of updating now, have done the first 6 hours, still more to go as 98 SE is an old program, if this goes on much longer I will probably go to XP, I did not really want to change just yet, I intended to get rid of this old kerosene computer next year, but I may have to do it now, still I will try and fix things for a while longer, maybe one of the updates may have the answer. I'll keep you posted.

I have completed all the updates (Nearly 40), feel that updates should not have really been needed, as nothing was deleted, only the program run over the top of the previous copy, anyway, sometimes the E mail goes and sometimes we get to 19%.....57% ....or 83%, then error 317 shows up. other times the mail will be sent at 100%, it was suggested that I try Zip the attachment, this made no difference, still the same results, sometimes it went and other times it failed. so I don't know what the answer is, thanks for your assistance and thoughts....Tony W

Then error 317 shows up...

Man, won't it be a hardware problem? I mean, a driver that is not good with Windows 98?
If you search google, you could find something interesting for 'Winsock' ...  ::)
