Only because before doing that you disabled the self-defence module or you wouldn't have been able to disable the service. So why you can't modify avast5.ini using notepad is very strange.

You say you believe you opened it in notepad, see image, this is opened in notepad, so does yours have Notepad in the title bar ?

If not you aren't using notepad, try right clicking on avast5.ini and select Open with and select notepad from the list.

davidr mine says same thing=notepad.
i went into safemode and was able to enter that line and add it to the ini file but when i boot back into windows now my browsers are no longer sandboxed and when i go to virtualization settings and click add(to add ff&ie)nothing happens?its like it disabled the sandbox.am i doin something wrong here?

Well I don't have the pro version so I can't check it out.

However, that said, it would depend on exactly what you enter as the parameter at the end of the line, given what PK said:
0 = hide, 1 = show always, 2 = show only for admin users.

If you put 0 them presumably it hides that option and you can't use it perhaps you should try =1 as the parameter.

snapshot back to  early install updated and did it again with 0 and it worked.i dont know maybe a glitch who knows.thanks everyone for your time.and thanks pk for your time and effort good job
