Why did ALWIL team not choose HIPS?
« on: April 14, 2010, 05:06:01 PM »
Hey,

I just want to know why a Behaviour Shield was chosen over a HIPS module?

It's nothing serious, but I'm curious.

Thanks in advance.

...
Also when does support for Avast 4.8 end (updates and product)?

HIPS can be very annoying and dangerous sometimes because it is dependent on user. HIPS is for the pros only.

As far that I know, they still releasing virus updates for avast 4.8 until September this year. There are no more program updates for 4.8

Having a HIPS is like having a full-time hobby.  An annoying full-time hobby.  I used to use a HIPS and spent lots of time configuring the death out of it, until I realized that no malware had ever screwed me over nearly as much as that software had.

We generally consider the classical HIPS as a 1st generation solution that gradually evolved in the 2nd generation behavioral solutions more intelligent to not ask many (if any) question... You know, for the most part, the user has always been the weakest link in the chain - and this applied not only to the average Joe but also to the geeks. And the reason for this is that the more questions you're getting, the more annoyed you are and the the less attention you give to them... so that the one REALLY important questions that you eventually get when the latest and greatest piece of malware hits your rig will simply be overlooked and answered incorrectly.

Though i'd like to see Behavior Shield actually do something sometime. Have tried many samples and not a single one has invoked it. Hardly any even caused any activity under it. So i'm now really wondering about it's true effectiveness.
