Avast 5.0.507
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:08:58 PM »
I usually get someone to update my free Avast antivirus.
This year I decided to do it.
Initially it appeared to work.  The icon changed from blue to orange and the pop-up message telling me the antivirus is working changed in appearance.
However, I keep getting messages that my license is about to run out in
17 days/16 days/15 days.
Can anybody help.

PS.  It took me 15 minutes to work out how to post a thread.  I could not find the page where it said start new thread.  Also, after I first typed out this message, I decided to use the spell check option.  I clicked it and my message disappeared.

So you see, I am not hot on computers.  Please keep guidance simple.
thank you.

Hello Zaffy, welcome to the forum.

I assume you just have to insert a licence key which you can get mailed to you for free if you register at the Avast website.

Is valid for a year or so. Normal procedure to be able to use Avast Free.

Or do you see a 'BUY' button in the user interface?  If so I guess you are using Pro version and not Free.

It's up to you.  You buy Pro or Internet Suite, or you uninstall and download and install the Free version.  (For which you then have to get this licence key to insert, via registration on the website)

You should be able to update your license from the GUI.

We might have to consider the possibility that although Zaffy is online, he might be clicking away furiously on another forum trying to find the ****** forum topic

Having problems on how to reply to messages.  I clicked quote, it seems to have done the trick.
Please could you tell me what the GUI asyn is?
Thank you

Hi Zaffy, GUI for Graphical User Interface, or in other words: the screen you see as a user (of the Avast software)

Reply by using the 'reply' button on the bottom of the forum page.

Is there a button 'BUY' in the Avast screens? If so, it can be used to renew your licence. Apparently you have a Pro version which is about to expire.

If not, you might be running the Free version; and it urges you to insert the (free) licence code you can get by registering at the Avast.com website.

GUI = Graphical User Interface
If you right click on the avast icon and choose the first line, the gui will open.

Edit for info - @anothermack: I leave Zaffy to your advice. ;) Thanks.
Edit #2: He/She is using the free version.

Thank you for helping.  I don't know what I did but somehow I have managed to update it properly this time.

I have another concern though. I went into my profile and there I saw for the whole world to see my email adress.  Surely this is wrong.  I have now clicked hide email, but when I click profile I can still see my email.  How do I know if I am the only person that can see it.  I am terribly worried.  I would like not to be a member and have my details removed please.
Please can you tell me how to unsubscribe to this forum.
Again thank you for your help.

Hi!!

You don't need to unsuscribe from the forum.

If I go to your profile it says:

Email:    Hidden

Don't Worry you're the only one that can see your email...  ;)

Greetings  ;D

Thank you, I was in a mad panic here.

I didn't know I had to click the hide email box.

When I checked my profile, after about two hours of becoming a member, I immediatly ticked the box but I could still see it.

Phew.  I wonder if it might be a good idea to have the tick the other way around, tick if you want to show your email, it might be safer.

Thanks again.

Only yourself and moderators can see your email address, it is hidden in posts, see image.

It is also hidden in your profile as Light Archangel said.
