No. Install does not work in Safe Mode. Bad advice.

Well, see... the installer does work in safe mode. In fact, it's been the only method that worked for me on two boxes for some reason.

Yeah there definately gonna wanna check this out. Also keep in mind that I ran full scans with Malwarebytes, Hijack this and Avast after using an exe based updater. Nothing came up.

Also let me say for the record that although Avast! 5 has been a massive pain in my ass as far as updating - its an excellent anti-virus program and definitely my new favorite. keep in mind that my last A/V was Eset so its not like I came from Trend Micro or Macaffe. I'll gladly help Avast! developers in anyway to see to it that this doesn't happen again to other users.

Did you ever install any other antivirus in this computer before? Which ones? How did you uninstall? (sorry to ask again).

Eset Smart Security 3. However I've since ran plenty of reg cleaners so that shouldnt be much a problem anyway.

Well... you've put the finger in the point...
Most probably, registry cleaners messed your system.
They're powerful tools, some does good and save (like CCleaner), some do it very deep and mess everything...

Hey Tech, thank you for your help and all, but please dont take this the wrong way. Can I get a second opinion from another technician or programmer as it seems like I may have uncovered a very serious issue and also I should note that I ran many of these reg cleaners precisely because of the fact that this program would not update from within the program its self.

SOLVED! didnt even have to go into system restore. It turns out that my setup files were encrypted when I placed them into my download folder (which I have encrypted by default). so when it installed the program files there was an inconsistency between the files under setup which were encrypted and the rest of the files under the AVAST! folder which were not. In otherwords if youre having this same problem and you either compress or encrypt your files than check to make sure that all your files under the avast folder match. you'll know because the title of each file should be in black not green or blue. Also you will have to disable file protection for when you do this. worked right away no restart needed. And make sure if your using windows firewall that you allow avast.setup under sfx folder internet access. WORKED FOR ME ATLEAST GOOD LUCK EVERYONE ELSE.
