Incredimail is a pop3 e-mail program and needs to be configured the same way as OutlookExpress.
Use the Mail Protection Wizzard to set up your e-mail

Thanks for that Bob, but it is configured the same as Outlook Express. Iwill look through the INI settings as suggested previously.

Perhaps I didn't explain myself very well.  The problem is with port 110 which appears to be in use by something else so Avast won't scan incoming mail. Outlook doesn't like ports 26 and 111 although Incredimail doesn't seem to have a problem.
Sorry for any confusion.

You mean Full Outlook (MS Outlook) or Outlook Express?

The first one should be let on 110 and you can configure avast4.ini file to scan it. See 'setting' on my signature.
But which program is using 110? Probably the spam killer, do you use any?
Outlook uses its own avast plugin and not the mail scanner.

Outlook Express could be at other port than 110.

 :) Thank you, it is Outlook Express.  This is configured on port 110.  I also use Incredimail which has a built in spam filter.  I have amended both to ports 25 & 111 and changed the ini file to match for both OE & Incredimail but this didn't work.  I amended the ports back to 25 and left the others at 111 and changed the ini file but neither work when I do this i.e. mail will not download.  Also some of the settings in your "settings" are different to mine, not just the missing port info for mail scanning.  If you can help I will be very grateful,
Thanks

Ok, this is normal. That is the 'full' known avast4.ini file... It's always under construction because new parameters are revealed or explained.  ;)

Set Outlook Express email accounts to port 110 (default).
Go to each email account, Properties, Advanced tab and set them to 110.

Close OE.

Run Mail Protection Wizard and choose protection for all accounts.

See if your avast4.ini file has, at least, the following lines into section [MailScanner]:

DefaultPopServer=your pop server address
DefaultSmtpServer=your smtp server address
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25
PopListen=127.0.0.1:110
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=1
Trust=127.0.0.1
StartSmtp=1

Will it work?

 :-\ Thank you for your continued help with this problem.  I have done as you have suggested.  The INI file is as you have said except AutoSetProtection=0.  Also when running the Mail Protection Wizard an alternative server address was given for the smpt server with # included.
However when downloading mail yesterday it appears that Avast is scanning incoming mail, before running the Wizard again, as a warning was given regarding the receipt one mail.  Is it just outgoing mail that is not being scanned?  :)

:-\ Thank you for your continued help with this problem.

Well, it will be better if I can solve the problem at first  :-\ I'm trying...

Is it just outgoing mail that is not being scanned?  :)

Can you test this? Send me an email with the subject phil test, check for add notes into the clean messages and I'll check if you get a scan message or not  ;)

Be happy! Your emails are being scanned!

Only you can't add the notes into the body.
See its header:

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0433-2, 10/08/2004), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0433-2, 10/08/2004), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

The first two lines are from you and the last two from mine.
Right now we must dig into another problem  ;)

Why don't you search the board for clean messages & notes... I've already read from it but I can't remember where...

Phil, the email body does not contain the message:

There are no notes on the clean messages.

Blue is from you and red from me.
I'll try to find a solution. But you're using Incredimail and this could give us a clue... Can you try sendind a mail from Outlook Express now?

E mail sent using Outlook Express as requested  :).  Whilst it was being sent I noticed the Avast icon in my system tray revolving suggesting that it was being scanned.

Strange man...
Only the Inbound note !?!

The header of your mail is bellow. You're scanning but without note. But I have a suggestion:

Add the line
UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1
into
[MailScanner]
section of avast4.ini file
Details here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647

Header:
Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 00:02:50 +0100
X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4922.1500
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4925.2800
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0433-3, 13/08/2004), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0433-3, 13/08/2004), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Hi there.  I have added the rule to the Mailscanner section of the INI file as suggested.  I have tested this by sending myself an e mail from both Incredimail & Outlook Express but neither have the Avast note on them for inbound or outbound.
