 :(Thank you gentlemen.  I have mentioned this previously, it is "a program bug or an invalid data entry" where it asks you to describe what you were doing so a report can be e mailed to the support team.

I will manually amend the ini file again and see what happens.

Your help is appreciated.

This is an extract from the log file:- Fault source

-----------
Crash place
-----------

 :( Hello guys.

Will I be getting a reply to my last entry?

Your help is needed as mail is still not being scanned. Avast generally seems to be working OK in all other areas and I am not receiving crash/bug reports as before unless I run the mail protection wizard or manually amend the ini file in an attempt to get mail scanned.

Cheers

 :) Thank you for coming back.

I use Outlook Express and Incredimail.  Operating system is Windows 98SE, firewall is ZoneAlarm. I also use Webwindow Killer, AD-AwareSE and Spybot S&D.

If you need to know anything else, please ask.

You neglected to mention which one is the default e-mail program.

philthehip, let's start again because I'm lost in so many roads we take to get where we're now:

Your system:
Windows 98SE
Outlook Express
Incredimail
ZoneAlarm
Webwindow Killer (is it a pop-up blocker?)
AD-AwareSE
Spybot S&D

Your avast4.ini file [MailScanner] section is:
DefaultPopServer=pop.ntlworld.com
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.ntlworld.com#smtp.ntlworld.com
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=1

You're receiving a message:
a program bug or an invalid data entry

Now, is this a message box? Can you click CTRL-ALT-PrintScreen, save the image or, at least, describe 'when' (what you ask the program to do...) this error occurs?

The crash:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL SOFTWARE\AVAST4\ASHPOPWZ.EXE caused an Access Violation at location 746e2e70 Reading from location 746e2e70.

Could be related to a bad avast! installation. I suggest:

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window.

SpyBot has a feature called TeaTimer (with an icon in the system tray). I suggest you disable it while trying to repair (or reinstall) avast.

Let's try. (Sorry only on October 13th I'll be back  ;))

 ;) Hello,

Incredimail is the default mail program and Web Window Killer is a pop up blocker.

I have done as you have suggested & reinstalled Avast. I had to do this several times as there appeared to be a bad link.

When I was satisfied I had received a good download as soon as I ran the Mail Protection Wizard I received the  message "a program bug or invalid data entry".  Yes this is a message box to report what had happened leading upto the program crash.  The crash message is from C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log.

I have run the Mail Protection Wizard again and received the same message box.

Avast seems to be running OK except for mail scanning.

On a slightly different topic ZoneAlarm doesn't recognise Avast as the resident anti virus program, is this normal?  8)

Yes it is but, it's recognized by windows as a security partner under SP2.
Eventually ZA will get their act together. ;D Till then, youst turn that feature off in ZA.

@ philthehip

I'm on NTL broadband through my set top box (ex nynex, ex cable and wireless customer)

The Mail scanner section of avast4.ini is

[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=pop.ntlworld.com
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.ntlworld.com
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=1

This works fine for me with Thunderbird as my email client and adds the notes also.

You might try reading some of the mail problems posted in the NTHell forums

www.nthellworld.co.uk

for some possible links.  NTL are famous (infamous) for repeated email problems.  You can also check your connection status and maintenance work here

 :) You will be pleased to know that after numerous attempts I have finally got a clean download of avast.  Although avast says it is not scanning e mail and it is not adding notes I can see that mail is being scanned in and out.

Thanks for all your help guys.  ;)
