What version of avast 5.0, free or pro ?
Are referring to the old trick of using ashQuick.exe (from avast 4.8 Home) for the download manager to call ?

If so, then this doesn't work in the free version as it has no command line scanner function and that is what the call to ashQuick.exe is for it to scan the downloaded file.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Actually, Logos and (eventually) I determined Avast free will scan files downloaded through a DM.

Lets put it this way, it doesn't work on my avast 5.0 free, files that are downloaded with Orbit Downloaded 'aren't scanned' when they were using avast 4.8 Home.

I just downloaded eicar with Orbit (Avast real time disabled) and it is detected using ashquick.exe and %file% as parameter in Orbit.

OK, a few weird things, now it is working with my download manager Orbit. Edit: I didn't use the %file% parameter as it doesn't seem to be required for ashQuick.

1. I downloaded via https to avoid the web shield blocking it.
2. The File System Shield detected it first (I have mine set to Ask) and I just said Block.
3. Then the ashQuick.exe detection kicked in, but all that does is give you an acknowledgement screen no actions.

So it looks like it works again, but doesn't indicate that the downloaded file has been scanned, and only displays if a detection is made, but no actions as in the normal avast detections.

Yes, that appears to be the case. I'm not sure if these action switches will work in Avast free, but might be worth a try. For me, notification is enough.
