If you don't know the best, fastest and safest settings, then the default settings are your best bet. The avast defaults provide the best compromise between protection and performance.
If your system is relatively quick then read the help file about the settings in the Scanning for viruses, Scan settings, Sensitivity and also look at the Full System Scan, Settings, Performance.
