You're welcome.

I don't believe any scan can be started when the PC is 'off.'
If you mean from standby or hibernation, then the answer may be yes as you can set it to wake up from sleep (whatever that definition is).

Me I tend to do a manual on-demand scan as part of my weekly system maintenance. Especially with avast 5.0 this scan on my system is relatively short as it isn't very cluttered. I don't have masses of software on it nor collections of images or medial files, etc.

So for me it is either a Quick or Full System scan, both with the Performance, Scan priority set to High, the remainder of the settings on the defaults and it is a very fast scan. Essentially the resident (on-access) scanners should keep out new infection or alert you to the presence of infection when something tries to be executed.

when u go into scan and then under actions, is it necessary to change what is checked off when installed? when i installed under actions the 1st box was checked off. the theres 3 choices under that.

under actions, if i click the 1st box it says, automatically apply actions during scan... i get 3 tabs,  VIRUS, PUP, SUSPICIOUS.  then it ask to move to chest, repair , no action.

which box is best to check off?

The actions can be changed but unless you have a good idea of how those changes might affect your system, the safest bet is to leave the auto selections as they are.

Move to chest is self explanatory it sends the file to a protected area where it can do no harm.

Repair isn't available on all detections as Trojans generally can't be repaired as the whole file is malicious, unlike a virus which places a small part into a pre-existing file. It may be possible to repair that if it is from a virus where a repair routine is available.

No action does as it says on the tin, it leave the file in place and take no action, what it won't allow is for you to run a file considered to be infected (it is effectively blocked).

In all detections you should investigate them.

As I said changing the defaults without knowing the impact isn't a good idea.

So if there is a single infected file inside an archive which can't be moved, the deletion/removal of complete archive could result in the loss of lost of other files, in the archive which aren't infected.

An example of this 'disaster waiting to happen' would be email database files an email folder stores multiple emails one of which could be infected and email folder is in actual fact a single database file (like an archive) and its removal could result in the loss of multiple emails.

So you really have to exercise care when tweaking AV settings (not just avast) if you don't know the impact it might have. I will let you guess what my settings are in relation to this setting.

i guess i will just set it back the way it was,

try to remove the packed file from the archive, if fails, do nothing. i dont like the do nothing part here. i just want the best setting possible.

2 weeks ago i got the system tool virus in my pc. now, how did it get in when i have avast? it looked very legitimate and i clicked it. i would like to know how it popped up to ask me to  click it.

Yes that may be the case but you should base any decision upon investigation and not automated decisions which are a generalisation.

Having had the alert you are:
1. aware of the problem and its location (within what archive).
2. assured that in doing nothing it still can't be executed.
3. after investigation based on what the file name and location of the archive is decide if the archive is in fact essential or not and if so could be removed manually or opened and manually remove the infected file within the archive.

So as you can see 'you' shouldn't be doing nothing, regardless of the auto action sequence that has been set.

I can't answer anything about a system tool  you got two weeks ago as I haven't got any information to work with.
