Avast Outlook plug in
« on: April 30, 2010, 11:15:23 PM »
I have posted elsewhere the problem I am having with Avast 5 and outlook 2000 (prevents Outtlook opening and shows an MS error at the Avast plug -in splash.  How do I remove the plug-in as I cannot get access to the Outlook toolbar.

Outlook 2007 > Tools > Trust center > Add-inns > Manage Disabled items.
Outlook 2003 > Help > About > Disabled items.
Outlook 2002 > Help > About Microsoft Outlook > Disabled items.
Outlook 2000 > Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.

You can disable it there.

Unfortunatelly, the custom install does not even offer an option to not install (or uninstall) the plugin.

The best things in life are free.

Maree,
that sounds strange, could you please

1. go to Avast > Settings > Maintenance and check "Enable debug logging"
2. start outlook and let it crash
3. post here your asoutext.log file and any possible .mdmp files from the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (Win2K, WinXP)
C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (Vista, Win7)

I shall have a look at where is it causing problems and come up with a fix so that your outlook will no longer be compromised.
Cheers

Well, first of all you apparently haven't found the LOG (that's not any executable, so wouldn't produce any such message like you've posted). Second, there's no need to open it, just attach it here (left from the post window, click Additional options, then Attach)

Eh...

1/ Run command prompt (as administrator if on Vista/W7) - (right-click on the shortcut)
2/ Paste this into the command prompt (Ctrl+C here and right-click into the command-prompt window you have opened)

Code: [Select]
del /f %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat
3/ Press Enter
4/ Run Outlook

What exactly is it that you don't understand in my instructions? I will try to re-phrase it better ... There is no reason to panic, just follow my instructions step by step ;-)
0. Ensure you have the latest version of avast! 5.0.545
1. go to Avast > Settings > Maintenance and check "Enable debug logging"
2. start outlook and let it crash
3. open "My Computer" window and depending on your version of windows paste one of the following into the location bar at the top of that window

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (Win2K, WinXP)
C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (Vista, Win7)

4. compress the contents of this folder into a zip file. To do so select the files, right click on one of them and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) Folder
5. post the zipped file here
