0x20000004 error is a "proxy down" error, i.e., server unreachable (or, in other words, "cannot connect to the updating server"). Is there any other Firewall installed on the machine besides Windows own firewall? Have you had any previous anti-virus program installed on this computer before installing avast? The last way is check your hosts file to see if there are any entries that could be blocking avast's update servers. A blank "default" configuration of the windows hosts file should basically have only one entry (127.0.0.1 localhost).

If you can update via the add/remove control applet but not from inside the program try this...

Open the avast ui and click settings and then select the updates settings page.
Check the box for "My computer is permanently connected to the internet". Then below select proxy settings and selected "Direct connection (no proxy)".

This resolved my issues.

I actually did this from the Add/Remove window. I could've sworn I already had that parameter set from the UI. I just happened to click on the Proxy setting, after I updated the definitions, and saw it. I also ran the repair utility again, while I was in there. Seems to be working fine, now. What a relief!

Had same problem... Windows Firewall only, Win7 64bit, could not connect to server.
Changed Settings > Updates > Proxy Settings from "auto detect (use IE settings)" to "direct connection (no proxy)" and now works.

Thx

Hello,

I had the same problem as others on this thread: Avast4.8 worked fine, no problem with the automatic update of the virus database. Then I am told I need to upgrade to Version 5 and then the problems started. I too have Ashampoo Firewall and I tried every suggestion I read on this thread, well at least the ones' I understood, with no luck at all.

To cut a long and boring story short, I uninstalled the Ashampoo Firewall in Safe Mode and loaded the Comodo Firewall, also free.

Avast 5 works a treat now and I have ended up with a better and more detailed firewall.

Cheers,
The Bof
