NTLworld SSL migration

I have just been informed by Virgin media that my ntlworld email account is migrating. From what I can gather it is now going to be an SSL connection.

I went into outlook express and changed over my account but was informed by avast to change it back.

When it went into mail shield on Avast it appears to have already detected the correct SSL connection details.

I assume that Avast is handling the SSL connection and that I leave outlook alone

Is this correct?

Yes, leave the OE account settings as they are. If the change to SSL include the use of a different email port, then you would need to change that.

If you did make the change in OE to use SSL, then avast couldn't scan your email as it is encrypted. avast should detect that the server uses SSL/TLS and act accordingly when it hands it off.

So does that mean that I need to change the POP and SMTP accounts in Outlook from their current values of 25 & 110 to 995 & 465?

If that is what NTL say, then I would say yes, but leave the other SSL bit unchanged, e.g. 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' unchecked for both SMTP and POP.

Nope, the only way I can get it work through without SSL is to leave the ports at default. Avast has identifed ports 995 & 465 as ntl.com SMTP SSL & POP SSL.
Here are the settings that Virgin require, when I put all the settings in the mail works but avast complains, removing SSL stops mail working. Setting ports back to default works again but I am not sure if it is just falling but to the old non-SSL connection.

You would still have to set the authentication user name and password in the OE accounts. It may be that because these accounts were previously non-ssl that they are still recorded as that in the avast setings, see below.

Check the accounts in the avastUI, Real-Time Shields, Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL Accounts and see if they reflect the new account settings, if not Try setting the Encryption Column entries to SSL and see if that works. Or try deleting the incorrect entries and reboot, this should force avast to recreate these accounts in the avast SSL Account settings.

Tried everything you suggested still no joy.

However one interesting thing has occured using the following steps
1) I put me OE email back to defaults (ports 25 & 110 no SSL or authentication)
2) Deleted all SSL out of Avast
3) Rebooted
4) Fired up OE and checked email, all come through OK
5) Checked Avast SSL and it shows ports 995 & 465 SSL.

However when I try and change OE to the new ports it all stops working again, so I am still wondering how avast picked up the SSL connections when nothing was trying to access them and whether or not it is taking data from ports 995 & 465 and passing them to OE on 25 & 110.

As I understand it Virgin/NTLworld is now the same as Gmail, surely someone out there must have got that working

OK having dug a bit more on these forums I hope I may have now got this right

In Avast the settings are now
 ntl.com   POP3    995   SSL
 ntl.com   SMTP   465   SSL

In OE the settings are now
 POP  110  no SSL
 SMTP 587 no SSL server requires authentication

OK, one more question.

Given that all my email accounts have now migrated to SSL and are using the settings as described above.

What do I configure Avast to use when it tries to send out a virus alert email? I have tried virus permutations but most of them just seen to lock up Avast
