Just finished updating to 5.0.545 on XP Sp3 with Comodo/Defense+ (no AV).

Very quick, restart, and no problems so far.

Thank you, Alwil.

If you look at my image you will see how long it took to download (4 minutes) I average about 1MB every 4 minutes, that is the rough rule of thumb I use to get an idea how long other downloads will take. The maximum I can connect at is 56Kbits per second (Kbps), you never manage to get a maximum (depends how far you are away from the exchange). I normally connect at 50.6 Kbps occasionally 52Kbps and sometimes 33.6Kbps or slower on a bad day fortunately they aren't too frequent.

Tried to upgrade on a computer with XP Home and Avast 4.8 which had registration expired.  Was intending just to re-register 4.8, but saw the button to upgrade to free v5 and clicked it.  It downloaded a setupeng.exe file of about 47MB without warning of size, on my mobile connection, and then failed with a suggestion that I should clear the IE6 browser cache and download again.

I used another computer to download the new 5.0.545 file, so that it wouldn't get lost again.  (Don't want to run out of data or hit 'fair usage' limits.)  Ran the new setup file on the old computer without any internet connection.  It reached the 'Finishing setup' screen and is stuck there.  Task Manager reports under 10% CPU usage, and the setup_av_free v50545.exe process is using 00% of the CPU.

I tried to cancel the setup, and then Zonealarm showed a request for internet access by avast. I connected the mobile dongle and allowed the setup to continue, but it still appears to be doing nothing.  Task manager reports that everything is running.

How long should it take to finish the setup?  It must have had nearly an hour so far.  Does setup require an internet connection (maybe to check for updates?)  There is no indication of it doing anything like scanning for viruses, which I would expect to be delayed until after a restart.

I didn't uninstall v4.8 but I would expect the installation to either handle this or display a request for manual uninstallation.

Gave up after about 1h20m and cancelled the 'finishing update' screen, and ran the setup program again.  Setup Sefextract now says 'Setup cannot be started at this time. avast! is currently updating. Please wait until it finishes and run setup again.'

Does it require me to leave the internet connection open on this unprotected computer while it finishes?  (Doesn't seem to be pulling in any updates, or doing anything.)

How long does this normally take?

  • If at first you don’t succeed; call it version 1.0

@Navvy and krypton
Navvy first, try a full install from scratch. Go here and download the uninstall utility (aswClear5.exe) and save it to your desktop.
-Have the install file you had previously downloaded handy, on the desktop or a flash drive.
-Disconnect from the net
-Right click any Avast tray icon, locate "program settings>troubleshooting" and disable the self-defense module.
-Uninstall any (and all) Avast versions from "add/remove programs" in the control panel. Note, you will lose any settings and quarantined items. Reboot- see next item.
-Run the uninstall utility. If there were problems with the uninstall, this should be run in safe mode. Reboot.
-Install Avast from the new installation file for 5.0.545. Reboot as prompted.
-Reconnect. Open the Avast interface, select "maintenance>registration" and fill out the required fields to register Avast.

You may wish to manually update the definitions, if I remember correctly, the program may have already done that as part of the setup. Let us know if that worked/didn't.

You will probably have to install the flash player for IE if you only have it installed for another browser. I've had that with other programs in the past. See if that works.
All the best.
