high cpu usage
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:54:20 AM »
happy halloween.  i have this thing that comes and goes. just the other night it started again where my computer is really slow and cant do anything on the internet cause of the computer resources being used up.  when the problem arises the cpu usage is over 50% and peaks at 100% a lot, i also get a weird beeping noise from my speakers.  sometimes just restarting helps, sometimes not.  but i want to know if any malware or spyware might be hiding or disguising itself.  i keep my machine as clean as possible with 3 other scanners along with avast and a separate firewall program.  im pretty diligent about clearing junk files, cache and cookies, scanning often and keeping stuff up to date.  i use three other add-ons too on top of all that with my browser to block any adware/spyware.  seems to work pretty well.

right now after messing with the computer it seems to acting okay now.  but when its not - it's very frustrating and scans dont find anything other than a few cookies or adware.  the most recent adware found was "questionmarket.com" but i have hijack protection and safeguards against popups and redirecting ads.

here's a screenshot of the processes, im curious to know if there might be anything there that looks suspicious.  last time, process "ETDCtrl.exe" was constantly using over 50% of the CPU and wouldn't stop, making everything slow.

MBAM found nothing

i've attached my OTL and aswMBR log

P.S. if zombies were to make a computer virus they would make it so it would eat the computer's brians.

sirMAXXX,

A little web query yielded the following re:  ETDCtrl.exe.

See:  http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=kjrmc&cp=4&gs_id=m&xhr=t&q=etdctrl.exe&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&source=hp&pbx=1&oq=etdc&aq=0&aqi=g4&aql=f&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=8562193df683b6ce&biw=1280&bih=885

which is a page in Google about this file.

See:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ETDCtrl.exe-26103.html  that is a web page in bleepingcomputer.com re this file.  A description of what this file does is included here.

Googling ETD Control Center yields this page:  http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=kjrmc&cp=4&gs_id=o&xhr=t&q=etd+control+center&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&biw=1280&bih=885&source=hp&pbx=1&oq=ETD+&aq=0&aqi=g4&aql=f&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=8562193df683b6ce

I suggest WOT (Web of Trust) add-on for Firefox so when you search in Bing, Google, etc., sites listed are rated in terms of trust, safety, and reputation.

Here:  http://www.mywot.com/  You will need to register one time per browser.  Same account can be used for all.

If you know what you are clicking, you will be much safer online.

Welcome to the forums.

im wondering if my etdctrl.exe might have a problem with it.  it keeps running at 50% and sometimes ccc.exe will run at 50% also which would make my computer lockup.  there are these sites that say "click this link here to get a 'free scan' to see if your etdctrl.exe is a virus or has an error" but im leery of stuff like that.

You can always check your files at http://www.virustotal.com/

To do this, use the browse button to navigate where say, ETDctrl.exe resides, or ccc.exe, and click send.  It will take a little time to upload your file.  If there is a previous report for the same exact file as yours, just click re-scan to have it tested with 40+ virus scanners.  You can post the results, if you wish, here by copying the url address in your reply.

This should address any concerns you may have whether your file(s) is clean.
