Self-hang in Avast UI when sending test SMTP email
« on: May 15, 2010, 12:12:08 PM »
What I did:
Opened Avast settings, configured virus alert via SMTP to use GMAIL (port 995).
Clicked TEST button.

Result:
Got an alert from Avast UI that it can't check secure SMTP, then the UI hang - would not respond or close, and does not allow me to close itself via TaskManager either. ::)
Looks like I'll have to reboot computer to get rid of the hand Avast UI.

Isn't 995 for POP3 with SSL of GMail?
Shouldn't it be 465 for SMTP and SSL?

yeah there's a mistake in the smtp ssl port (should be 465/ssl or 587/TLS).
Anyway, the goal of my post here is to tell that testing the virus alert is fine, it really works >>> but testing the same in "real world" conditions, with an EICAR file, brings no mail ;D it just doesn't work. I posted that a while ago and Vlk told me that it's a known issue with ssl accounts, test works, but that's it ;D he didn't say why, just that the procedure when testing and the procedure when sending a real alert were quite different, and it couldn't work with ssl.

Yes, my mistake. But I get exactly the same hang with port 465, and no email is sent.
