I have a child  that has enabled the password protection on avast home and now I cannot access that system .....Gulp..... any suggestions????

Hi,

the password-protection in avast imho only locks changing the avast configuration/tasks,
you should still be able to access WIN/the system, right ?

try uninstalling avast, reboot and reinstalling it without password..
you need to be admin-user for this..

you might also try the above board-search on this..
