Kerio or Sygate?
« on: July 16, 2004, 03:13:18 AM »
Hi, I'm looking to switch firewalls and I'm just looking for simple one word answers to my question.
I've used Zone Alarm Free and Pro and both caused me problems and I'm using Outpost Free at the moment which I like but I've always found it a little quirky and unpredictable.
I'm trying to decide between these two and I want one to play nice with avas!
So, Kerio or Sygate? (free versions)

fanny,

I use Sygate on my Win XP and ME.  On my Win 98, I have Zone Alarm.
Sygate was not stable on the W98 machine for some reason.  ZA worked best.

Avast works with most firewalls that I have used so you have a wide choice:
Sygate
Kerio
Outpost

There are others, but these are the most common.

I find that Kerio is a bit confusing in ithe "permission" requests.
Sygate is pretty straight forward right out of the box.

good luck

Isn't Kerio designed for more advanced users? I would recommend trying out both and picking one. Since you can only decide which you like best.

I don't know why don't You like Zone Alarm as I'm using ZAPro version and it works perfectly with my avast! Home Ed on Win98 SE. I don't have any problems. But if you want to use Kerio or Sygate I recommend you Seagate, as kerio is sometimes complicated to use espesially on security setting inside computer. Sygate is better choise for you. Good luck and be secure!

Zone Alarm free/pro/suite all work fine on Win98 (SE) and seems to be fine on Win ME, but 2000 and Xp seem to have problems with it, but i am using Sygate at the moment on my Win98SE and it seems fine.

I have never used Ouypost so i don't no about that.

I tryed Kerio before (i think it was beta version) and it blocked everything from the start bar to my Documents, i couldn't even access my  drive though My computer, and get this, it did some alert haker thing when i tryed to restart my comp, i had to start my computer in safe mode and manuly remove it.

Staind is fully correct (as usual  ;D)
ZA is working perfectly on my XP Pro SP1+
But if you need to change, I'll suggest (by order):
Sygate, Outpost, Kerio 2.5, Kerio version 4 (not stable for me).

I tried outpost free 1.0 then outpost pro 2.1. Outpost free 1.0 worked really fine but the pro version was very unstable (internet connections blocked, program crash, doesn't remember trusted applications...). Finally i switched to Kerio 4 and all is fine since then. Outpost free 1.0 is a good choice for beginners. Kerio is more for advanced users.

It becomes a bloatware...
Firewall, spam catch, pop up killer, cleaning options... and so on.
Version 2.15 is quite good, for advanced users, stable, unique.

If you configure bad a firewall, it's better do not have any... You will only have a sensation of protection and not a protection at all. Kerio is for advanced users. ZA and Sygate do the same protection for us.

I prefer Sygate Personal Firewall. Outpost would now be my second choice.
