system restore xp on or off
« on: May 19, 2010, 09:40:35 PM »
Irish computer disaster here to annoy once more ,
should system restore be on or off , mine is off , I'm running MWAB Pro and Avast 4.8 pro , after much research on the net many advise not to run system  restore in case of virus , malware infections as having system restore ON can cause problems when cleaning out trojans , worms etc.

Any thoughts anyone ,
Thanks in advance

Paul

Welcome back!

Eh, I usually keep it on if the hard drive isn't too full.  It might help you out one day.  However, if you get a virus, then it should be turned off while cleaning the system.  Otherwise, what you have read is right; the virus will probably spread along the system restore, so if you use it to try to clean your system, it won't help any.

System Restore should be on unless you have something to take its place or you have no ability to go back to a date in the past to recover from a system problem.

Windows XP System Restore General Information System Restore Guide

System restore is far from infallible but is better than nothing.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Update to avast! V5:
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then Signature: and put information about your system just like my signature about your system just like my signature so that the helpers can offer pertinent advice.

In Account Related Settings select Hide email address from public to prevent scammers and spammers harvesting your hotmail.fr email address.

I always work on the basis that an infected restore point is better than none

Your profile does not show CPU type nor speed nor amount of system RAM.

I prefer avast! V5 as it is faster

I agree that it should be on and you can reduce the amount of space it's allowed to use easily. I run mine at 1% of HD space. I have never had to use it but you never know , it could come in handy. If you get an infection, after cleaning things up and making sure everything is back to normal, turn off system restore. This will automatically delete all the restore points you have, infected or otherwise. Then turn it back on and start over from your clean working base.

You should be able to see that info by just right clicking om My computer and choosing properties.
If you can't enable system restore, open windows explorer and check the security settings for the C: drive. If there are not groups listed for system and administrators they will have to be added and granted full control. You will have to be logged in as an administrator to do this.
