Avast 5' sandbox and something else.
« on: May 19, 2010, 06:24:26 AM »
I already asked thie question before but no one bothered to give me a good answer. I need to make this clear first: It is the sandbox that causes a 6 second lag to view the folder My Computer in Windows XP Pro SP3. It is no one else's fault because once I removed the sandbox feature the problem went away. Adding it back in brings the problem back. Not only is it that folder that lags, anything that shows the root directory of the hard drive, like when you download something and choose a destination, you choose the 4th option which is My Computer that shows the root directory of everything, it will lag. It even happens in the drop down menus. Tell me how can I fix this.
          1. There are NO conflicting programs
          2. Problem is present only when sandbox is installed
          3. Nothing is in the sandbox while this occurs, even if something is in there, problem the same
          4. When the 6 second lag occurs, all other open folders and taskbar lag along, I think explorer.exe (windows shell) lags
Assume those things because I confirmed they are true. Please don't make me get all excited that there are replies just to see they read "How do you know there aren't any conflicting problems?" or this or that. Straight up answer.

Also, is it me or is it that Avast causes pages to not load for a minute of two in Firefox. It may be Firefox 3.6's fault but Avast seems to contribute.

This will be of no great comfort except that you won't think you're being ignored.
I have experienced stability issues with sandboxed programs but on the 4 XP SP3 machines at my 'fingertips' with AIS 5.0.454 and FF 3.6.3 and I can't reproduce the problems you describe. Maybe someone else has?

Yea this kinda sucks but maybe I'll consider sandboxie.
Or maybe its because when I reinstalled Windows XP I went through 1-2 hours of configuring it for best performance and security. Maybe I'll undo those changes and see what happens.
By the way, if I make a restore point before I start configuring Windows, will I be able to restore back to it and have all the configurations not have happened? Should be right?

blue_fyre: sandbox is really blamed for your 6sec lag - the problem is, sandbox resolves icons shown in "My Computer" window and OS hangs when it tries to get properties from non-fixed devices (e.g. floppy icons). This bug was present there since the first avast5 release date and I'm sorry I've never noticed it before (maybe only XPs are affected)... the easiest fix is to disable your floppy device from Device Manager (run sysdm.cpl, Hardware tab -> Device Manager -> Floppy disk drivers -> Disable). Otherwise, you can uninstall virtualization feature or wait for the next beta program refresh. Thanks.

Awesome. Instant fix but I kinda miss that floppy disk icon. I've decided that when I get to college I'll major in some computer thing so I can have the same knowledge as you.

By the way, I recently unplugged my floppy disk to make room for a new hard drive and cd dvd drive. If I somehow reconnect the floppy will this problem be gone?

blue_fyre: most of our devs use a file manager (totalcmd, far, ...) so we've seen that problem until someone complained here. Next avast build will fix this issue, so when you reconnect your floppy drive, it should work ok.
