That link is for TH3.0.  Im using TH2.0 because BirdieSync wont play well with TH3.0.

See the thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58711.0 .  There are pictures of exactly how to set up Thunderbird 2 to use Gmail with Avast! 5.0.545.  Previous version 4 didn't scan gmail at all unless you went through the Stunnel scenario.  Don't know how your search missed it.

doesn't make any difference, thb2 or 3, the settings are the same. So do what I told you here, or see the screen shots posted in the other thread by me and sded, it's the same http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58711.msg506322#msg506322

I did but with no luck.  Im running POP.  143 didnt work.  What port # should I use for POP?

I said 110 (for POP)

No love at 110.  Just times out.    :(

Uncheck TLS also and check "Use Secure Connection never".

If you check "never" and "no", Avast! will take care of providing your secure connection independently of TB.  Works fine for the rest of us.

Ive done everything you said (including the Avast settings) and Gmail wont even logon, and now that Ive unchecked TLS I now cannot send.

Seems this is on the gmail end.  Gmail wont let TH 2.0  come in its door to check the password.  When I use the 995 port at least I can get in but no happy happy.

Ok, sorry for this..I know I am opening up a can of worms..but.......
Average joe user here with another installment of.....
Why do we make life difficult?
I use the Firefox browser, NoScript and AdBlock installed.
I too use Gmail.
There is a very simple reason why I use Gmail....
I get to do all the things with mail as if I have it on my system.....
without having it on my system.
This seems to take care of that whole.."What about the email nasties?" question
that I see over an over. Now before some of you have a cow over this, know this one simple fact...
I have been using Gmail, both personal AND for business and I have not run into anything that I needed to do that I could not do using the gmail servers.
I personally do not use the email scanner because I simply do not need to.
Now, I am NOT suggesting that you abandon the email scanner, I am just asking you
to consider the fact that you may not NEED to download email to your system.
Just something else to consider.
Ok, you may all have a cow now.  ::) ::) ::)

Its not working fine for most.  Hence all of the post regarding the "G-hell" issue.  Check out the snaps of my TH 2.0 and Avast settings above.

My previous version of Avast (before v. 5.0.545) worked great with my POP Gmail in Thunderbird 2.0.  Now, there is an issue with Gmail's SSL setting.    I searched for a fix but only found a drawn out dog and pony show..  Not to mention the need to download another program!

With the popularity of Gmail you would think the Avast people would have fixed this issue.  But whats got me spinning is why didn't the previous version have the Gmail SSL issue?

If I'm missing something please let me know.  Otherwise, I'm uninstalling Avast and going else where.

Thanks,
Nylo

Isn't this essentially the same problem raised in an earlier post?
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=59696.0
I don't know why the problem exists, but the last post in that thread provides the fix.
I think it was covered in a post while I was typing.

It is working well for me now.

Regards,
Jerry

Don't know how it got changed, but the gmail.com POP3 account should show port 995 with encryption set to SSL, not none.  So you can change it from that page.  Do you not look at the posted pictures?  Are you not using gmail smtp?  It should show up here with port 587 and TLS.  Try setting the comcast smtp to TLS on the avast! SSL accounts if that is what you are using.
As far as Gmail specifically, all inbound and outbound email is scanned by a very effective virus scanner at the server end, so if you want to bypass the avast! email scanner there is not a great deal of danger.  If you are using some other email server, YMMV, which is where the avast! scanner becomes more useful.

In:    pop.gmail.com port: 995
Out:  SMTP.gmail.com Port: 587

SSL checked.
Secure connection: TLS

use imap for GMAIL

-------------------------------
Examples for Thunderbird:
In:    imap.googlemail.com  port: 143
Out:  smtp.googlemail.com  port: 25

and disable all security conections.

Configure you count in gmail habilite imap

-------------------------------
In avast:
delete all accounts SSL, avast create automatic again the account SSL´s in few minutes

-------------------------------

Sorry my english

Good Luck
