OE6, YahooPops,Hotmail Popper, and Spamihilator Question

Hi,

On the download side I have just configured Outlook Express to talk to Avast which then talks to Spamhilator for five email accounts:

1x MSN
1x Hotmail
2x Yahoo
1x Lineone.net (Tiscali)

and everything seems to be working ok (amazingly!)

On the send side, The MSN and Hotmail accounts go to Avast and then use port 25 to reach Hotmail Popper (free edition).

These emails contain X-header info inserted by Avast and I've also enabled the insertion of an Avast message into the email body.

The two Yahoo accounts go to Avast and are then passed onto YahooPops via port 24.

These emails contain the inserted text in the message body but there's no Avast X-header insert. Consequently, I'm not too sure if they are being scanned 'properly' or not - can anyone advise please?

John, I think it won't be the safer situation.
Spamihilator should 'see' the message to judge if it is a spam or not. At that time it will only collect text (not attach or virus on the message body).
Avast must 'listen' all incoming emails or you won't be protected. It will 'listen' and scan even that text parts read by Spamihilator.

The reason I was considering putting Avast between Spami and YahooPops & Hotmail Popper (rather than between Outlook Express and Spami) was because I thought that if I clicked on 'View Message' in Spami's Recycle Bin then it might unleash a virus that Avast hasn't had a chance to check.

On the other hand, I really don't know much about computers and how Spami works - is the Recycle Bin some kind of 'safe area' where emails can be looked at without nasty viruses escaping? (er, it might be obvious that I don't know how viruses work!).

Also, do you know if my Yahoo emails are being scanned properly Technical? The Avast text messages in the email bodies are reassuring but I'm wondering why the Avast X-header inserts are missing.

Do that and you will see the X-header of avast...
You'll see that avast has already scanned that messages

No, it's not safe.
Safe is 'Virus Chest' on avast (an avast special folder that contains the infected files. The files are passworded by avast and nothing could 'open' or 'run' the files. There they're safe). Recycle bin of spami is not for that. The emails need to be scanned before they reach the recycle...

Strange. I don't use yahoo but avast can't scan (in actual version) emails that are not pop3/smtp ones. Take care and search the board for yahoo. You will find other suggestions to handle this kind of messages.

Ok, I'll have to change my configuration then. At the moment emails are being downloaded to Spami and only after that do they go to Avast (and then finally to Outlook Express).

This is a spam message that's in my Spami recycle bin at the moment:

I'm beginning to think that the Yahoo problem may just be an anomaly - if I send an email with an eicar attachment from Outlook Express using my Yahoo account then Avast picks it up ok but nothing appears in the headers.

I've also managed to connect Avast to the sending of emails from forte agent (free edition) and I was feeling so pleased with myself (especially as all these things are working over an AOL connection) that I installed AOL9, Abintrusion, and Process Control all in one day.

Er, things got pretty grim so I uninstalled the lot

Guess I'd better learn to walk before I run!

Just remember, AOL9 is an invasion. It takes over your whole operating system. Even after it's removed it still leaves all sorts of things behind.

I give you a lot of credit for making all those programs work in unison with avast.

I'm not only pleased that everything is working but I'm also very pleased with Avast! (free) itself!

For the last two years or so I've been using PC-Cillin which was supplied by my Bank as a 'freebie'. I always felt that it was some kind of cut-down version - it only seemed to work on IE6 and I don't think mail-scanning ever worked at all (not that it was broken, there just wasn't much in the way of options).

I can now see Avast! working on both browsers & email and when I'm not on such a tight budget I'll give the Pro version a whirl.

On the downside, I'm pretty disappointed with AOL not working properly (I've gone back to AOL8) but it'll be a few days before I can summon up the energy to find out what was wrong - I'm thinking of changing ISPs but my main hesitation lies in the fact that my website has been online for about 5 years and I'll lose all search engine placements/links to my website (etc.). Still, it might be time to call it a day as far as AOL is concerned!

I must admit the website has grown in pretty much an ad hoc way and I've been unhappy with it for some time - it needs a major overhaul, and if I change ISPs, I may as well kill two birds with one stone!

The (unstated) unifying theme to the current contents of the website is the relationship between evolution and a specific type of psychological trauma.

The three main sections are:

1) A proposed model of an internal evolutionary mechanism (based on an extension to homeostasis) linking Stationary-Phase Mutations to the Baldwin Effect.

2) Psychological trauma

3) How 'maladjustment' to 2) can lead to 'Socially Acceptable (psychological) Violence'

Hope that's a bit clearer!

As I mentioned in the original post I use Outlook Express for the following email accounts:

1x MSN
1x Hotmail
2x Yahoo
1x Lineone.net (Tiscali)

The Lineone account is a leftover from the days when I had several ISPs and paid for internet access by the minute. I just use it to download stuff because I could never get 'send' to work owing to my using an AOL ISP rather than a Tiscali/Lineone one.

Anyway, I noticed in the Avast! help files (Setting up the Mail Protection: Manual Setting of Mail Protection) that it says:

additionally, it is possible to set the login name in the form #smtp.tiscali.com, which means that the mail will be sent using the server smtp.tiscali.com without any authentication.

I tried it and now I can send on smtp.lineone.net!

I'm not at all sure why it should start working now but I'm pretty pleased about it - even if I never use it anyway

It certainly is Bob but its not quite the bonus I first thought it was!

After I went offline this morning, it occurred to that Avast! was using port 25 (on which Hotmail Popper sits) as my default SMTP server so I began to wonder how the message had got 'out' (so to speak).

I checked the headers and then sent a message from my Outlook Express Lineone account to two AOL addresses and one MSN one.

The MSN one couldn't be sent - and I'm pretty sure this is because Lineone/Tiscali isn't my ISP - but the other two went straight into the AOL system & arrived ok.

Very much an oddity from my point of view, but one that'll eventually make sense as I learn more - I hope!
