About the avast! updates
« on: July 19, 2004, 12:55:23 AM »
Hi,

I notice that a lot of times, the avast! takes a long time to put the updates available, when the most of the other's AV put it every day...

What's happen? I see this happen in this website: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,10807961~mode=flat , and if I use the avast!, I don't feel secure with this...

Thanks

Usually 2X a week unless there is important stuff to update than it could happen twice in a day.
Why update daily if there is nothing to update?

I'm only asking because I see that all the majors AV updates almost every day, and some times more that one for day... So I just was curious to know why avast! doesn't make the same...

One of the reasons I got away from Norton was because it took over my whole computer with enough garbage to fill my cities dump site.
I'm very happy that avast only gets updated when needed.
Remember, thats only my opinion.

The avast! team would rather appropriate to answer this question.

Yes, I feel like what VaMPiRiC_CRoW does when it comes to the frequency of update of avast! but I want you to know something. As I can remember I've used avast! for almost 1 year I get online almost 20 hours I receive almost 100 e-mails a day and avast! has never let me down it caught every worms that hit me via e-mail. avast! does what it says right on time.

But I'm not avast! obsessed person that nonsense-fight to everyone who says avast! is not good antivirus. avast! didn't detect some spyware and trojan downloader that got through my machine while other AVs such as Kaspersky, NOD32 detect. But avast! doesn't claim it is good at spyware detection.

I think ALWIL team should write up more about some major ITW malware information on its website. It's not good to see the latest threat is Win32:Sasser on ALWIL website while Beagle.AF is the major latest threat.

If you post a link to a website, please make sure everyone can open it without the need to create a account at a forum or such.

I happened to be awake and online when sasser was discovered, not that it was of importance to me, cause I keep my system up to date. But curious as I am I watched many av software companies, wondering when they would bring out a update that recognized it. Avast was one of the first!!  :D

Avast never had let me down and who else has a forum where people react so fast and accurate as this one? :D

According to a survey I read, on average 15 new viruses/variants appear daily. How much would you pay for av software that releases a update as soon as one is discovered? Think of all the people who are needed for that. A update released when really needed is fine enough for me.

After all, the best protection against viruses/spy-/ad-/malware is still the human mind and not a piece of software ;)

Yeah i remember the Sasser update speed. Also Safi.B
I got VPS update and like 15minutes after that i got around 5 mails with this worm. Sasser was detected and deleted even before it was able to install itself (even without Sasser Patch!).

First, the name of the AV's are in alphabetic order...
Second, if you see the link when I started this Topic, you will see that the last update of the avast is from 16 of July, all the others AV's had the updates of 18 of July...

If you saw when I put the link, you will see that only avast! and TrendMicro (PC-cillin) doesn't update since 16 of july...

And you know that I'm right...

Yeah, but if you check situation now you'll see that avast! is up to date and others are not.
And don't forget they updated it twice today :)
avast! update system is just fine. Updates in every 2-3 days if nothing special and more if required.

I would much rather updates were as required, rather than to a schedule.

The auto update feature when you go on line is also better than you having to go looking/checking. My experience with avast is better than any of the AVs I have used over the other companies, AVG, PC-cillin, MacAfee, etc.

Not sure if it was my imigination but wern't there two updates today?
