I would much rather updates were as required, rather than to a schedule.

Not sure if it was my imigination but wern't there two updates today?

I think you'll find that just about every a-v around works to a fairly standard schedule when it's "slow", in terms of new stuff appearing in-the-wild, but updates much more frequently if there's a flood of new viruses.  I don't think anyone else can come even close to Kaspersky's "standard", which is several times a day, but that's still their normal schedule.

And yes, we've seen two updates (so far) today -- I've seen 3 a day sometimes when the net is going crazy with new infections, and others who've used avast longer than I have may know of times when there were even more updates in a day than that.

So avast, like every other a-v I know of, updates "on schedule" when that's appropriate -- and as required when that's more appropriate.

Best,
Mike

Keep in mind that we're still over the weekend, and just like any other business (and Alwil is a business, after all) things do slow down over the weekend.

Don't worry, they're not "sleeping at the switch" -- if something considered fairly high-risk emerges and can be properly identified, we'll get updated defs for it right away.  But if things stay quiet, then we'll most likely see a fresh update (or possibly more than one) sometime tomorrow.

Well it's quite normal that the last update was on Thursday... I mean, it's halcyon days, right? ;) (Uhmm, I meant, slack season ;))

Or do we have to issue void updates just to make you happy? C'mon...

With AVG it was a regular occurance to go 7 days (sometimes longer) without an update. Even then some of  the updates failed and I had to download and install it manually.

How about all the times when we had more than 1 update in a day?
I guess you can't please all the people all the time.

Updating is not about pleasing anyone, it's about efficiency.
We dislike the idea of making updates even if they are completely unnecessary. Luckily our business is not driven by marketing and sales people... :)

Hi,

Just to throw in my 2 pence worth.

I have used Avast Home Edition for about 8 months (Before used F-secure) and Avast as not let me down.

As the previous post said Avast Updates a couple of times a week but when outbreaks occur the defs are out within a couple of hours/ Look at the VPS history on the website. Sometimes there are couple of VPS releases a day during oubreaks.

F-secure was very good to but 2 big names 'Norton AV and Mcaffee' only put out there defs once a week. They will update in 'outbreak' situations but in many cases they have been several hours later after F-secure, Avast have updated.

Well done Avast. You are doing an excellent job.

Kind Regards

Jlo

A long time ago I used McAfee on my first pc because it was on the pc from the factory. I tried to download updates on line when it said there were updates due. Huh, you might have just as well gone to the store, taken a nap, and do many other things while waiting for the updates to download from their site. This was usually done once, maybe twice per week, thats all. Norton was next. Wasn't impressed with their ability to keep up with the threats that were on the Internet in a timely manner. Then came along AVG which I used. It didn't update as efficiently as Avast has but was somewhat better than the first two I mentioned. Folks, feel very lucky to be able to use the Avast program because its a very efficient program with a very good forum that most other virus companies don't have. Thanks ALWIL :D
