I did update the virus definitions last night too (I do manual, and know how to change the service in services, it has always been that way).  It was IAVS update only.

So, 2 things involved.  Not just McAfee (I thinkd it stopped working after the IAVS update).

So, as it seems you are not that tired after all, we'll work this out. ;)
Please post all security related software, running on your system.

Avast 4.8 professional

McAfee Security Center and Firewall (the Security Center configures the firewall).

Using firefox and Noscript

Before, Script blocking ran if McAfee launched, or if a script was launched in Firefox.

Now, nothing.

Ok, this is more a workaround, but the easiest way would be to deactivate the script blocking in avast as you already use the Firefox add-on NoScript...! It does the same (and more!!) and is quite configurable..!
Nevertheless, you should update your avast to 5.0.545 soon...!

However, they are saying there is a problem with system restore and other things, which needs to be fixed.  Don't I need script blocking for the computer itself?

1. However, they are saying there is a problem with system restore and other things, which needs to be fixed.
2. Don't I need script blocking for the computer itself?

1. The bugs are getting fixed as we talk/write. Next update is out in about 2 weeks....
But again, I'm talking about the 5.x version, there will be no further updates for 4.8, that I know of. (latest/last build there is 4.8.1368) .
2. What do you mean..?? What kind of scripts do you want to block..??

It increases protection indeed.
But you can circumvent this with Firefox + NoScript.
I think version 4.8 won't receive further updates.
