ZoneAlarm does not play nice with Avast or anyone else!
« on: June 13, 2010, 01:22:39 AM »
This is ZA's response to the following ZA forum post at
http://forums.zonealarm.com/showthread.php?t=70642

Re: Constant alerts on 3 forcefield programs
Samething is happening to me, began today (9/16), constant ZoneAlarm red/high alerts for forcefield and iswsvc.exe. Does anyone know the fix?
----------
Following is Item 23 in the looong response on September 17, 2009, in post 5 of the thread.  (It appears to be from ZA Support.)  Note the instruction to remove, not just disable, the listed programs.  I did it the easy way, I immediately removed ZA and forcefield using Revo Uninstaller.  No more alerts.

"23.) ZA does not play nice with many other security tools. They may block its correct functioning including updates. For example, spyware doctor, spysweeper, trojan hunter, win patrol, PCtools Threat Fire, Mcafee, Norton, Symantec, Adaware, SpybotS&D, WinPatrol, AVG, Avast free, NOD, Kaspersky, Comodo, Rising, PC Doctor, MS OneCare and many others. If you want to troubleshoot issues with ZA please remove these tools (not enough to disable) and install back (if you really need) only after you see your ZA is working as it should."

You might find the whole response interesting!

Quoting from something that was started in 2006 is not exactly current.
Welcome to the forum. :)
There are many here that use ZoneAlarm without any problems.

I want to make something clear, ZA's Forcefield is a separate product from ZA's firewall.

I've never used Forcefield.   I only use ZA's fw.  The fw is trouble free.

All softwares have bugs now & then, even ZA.

The referenced post by ZA in their own forum was dated September 27, 2009.  Whatever ZA's attitude and/or ethics were in 2006 when the thread started, I doubt they had a miraculous, "Aha, I see the light!" less than 10 months ago.  Note that they _require_ uninstalling practically any security software one might have installed.  But that's okay, they say you can reinstall it afterwards, "if you really need it."  My mistake was installing the update.

As for those who have no problem with ZA, I didn't either for six or so months.  When I install a critical new program or an update, I first update and run both Malwarebyte's Anti Malware and Super Anti Spyware, then update Avast and run a full scan, then drop Avast's shields, disable my DSL  connection, and finally do the install, after which I reboot.

Paranoid, huh?

Maybe you should have just installed ZA without uninstalling anything.
It's what what most people do without any problems.  :)

Woops!  Thanks, Asyn.  Since I'm still new to the forum with only 5 posts, I got confused in the format.  However, I'm a bit surprised that an old-timer like Bob, with 13515 posts, also made such a newbie mistake.   ;-)

Not really, Bob.  It's not my style to make snide remarks, and I apologize.  Let's just say we have very strong opposite opinions about ZoneAlarm and let it go at that.

Have a great day in beautiful NM!
