Avast home witrh ZoneAlarm...
« on: July 21, 2004, 03:14:24 PM »
Is better to use Avast Home! with ZoneAlarm 5.0 or search an other solution?
Now I'm using Sygate but I see that in some case the traffic over the net of some application starts!!! It lock the traffic a second after the application ask the connection... This is the motivation for my change.
Because the traffic of some Windows service as Generic Host Process receicve and send data?! I have blocked it!!! But it send data and receive... this Sygate is bugged?!
I have checked the system to find viruses but there isn't.
Bye.

Sygate and Avast work good together. If you plan on going for ZA, get 4.5. Version 5 has some issues and is not recommended.

If you tell us what applications/processes are trying to access the net I (we) can tell you more about allowing/disallowing them.

The Application is the Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. I see in the Sygate Firewall that this app send data and receive other.... Some data are in the incoming allowed section, other in the block section...
Is possible that this traffic is only Localhost traffic maked from windows to some services?
I have tryed ZoneAlarm and I have see that this program ask te permission for the Localhost traffic but Sygate not. I hope that is this the difference....
In alternative what firewall is good? I have lost credibility in Sygate after this strange problem....
Bye.

ZoneAlarm Pro 4.5 works very well if you want a software firewall.
Best is getting a router with hardware firewall. (about 40 usd)

Artras, I use Sygate firewall.
I have noticed that there are so many incoming TCP and UDP connections that use the service nbf.sys.
This is the log:
07/22/2004 10:40:23   Allowed   3   Incoming   UDP   1.253.128.10   00-0C-CF-77-E8-70   53   1.255.9.86   00-04-5A-75-52-94   1387   C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\nbf.sys   pc   PC   Normal   1   07/22/2004 10:39:18   07/22/2004 10:39:18   Ask all running apps
Do I have to leave free?
Thanks.

nbf.sys is part of the netbui protocol. If you don't need netbui I suggest you remove it from the network properties.
