keeping ZoneAlarm shutdown
« on: May 30, 2011, 07:02:24 AM »
While using Avast free antivirus and Windows firewall, I wished to turn off all functions of ZoneAlarm Security Suite without uninstalling ZoneAlarm.  To do this, I right clicked the ZoneAlarm  icon on the system tray then clicked Shutdown ZoneAlarm Security Suite.  However, when the computer was restarted ZoneAlarm also restarted.

To prevent this, I went to the startup tab of the System Configuration Utility which contained a ticked startup item zlclient.  I unticked this but after restarting the computer this item appeared ticked.

I then opened the folder C:\WINDOWS\tasks which contained nothing related to ZoneAlarm.  I then looked in C:\ Documents and Settings\User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup which again contained nothing to do with ZoneAlarm.

I also opened the text file C:\WINDOWS\win.ini but I do not understand it

I gather that this problem may be solved by editing the registry but I do not know how to do this.

My operating system is Windows XP with Service Pack 2.  The ZoneAlarm Security Suite version number is 9.1.008.000.

The solution to this problem would be much appreciated

The soloution to your problem is quite plainly get rid of zone alarm or avast, you should not have more than one av on your system even if you have disabled one of them because low level drivers will still be active and cause conflict, you also need to upgrade to XP SP3.

Why would anyone use zonealarm with avast? No offense, I keep reading that having avast and zonealarm will create conflicts. Am I wrong?

Not necessarily. But, indeed, they have troubles in some systems.

I think you are wrong.

I have Zone Alarm along with avast! on two of my computers and I am unaware of any problems.

Oh, yes, I did not crawl out from under a rock recently. ;D

You do realise that the OP is talking about Zone Alarm security suite being on his system with avast ! not just the firewall which is why i mentioned uninstalling one of them.

Ok, two antivirus will always conflict. The only firewall could be used with avast.

Simply unticking "Load ZA at startup" in the preferences in Zonealarm stops it starting up.
Works for me everytime
