Set the avast Update settings to "No proxy" instead of "Auto detect" and test again.
SmartGuy, delete all entries of avast into the firewall program settings.Boot.Allow them again after boot.avast.setup need access.
Try specifying how you connect to the internet, dial-up or always connected?
In case of Ashampoo, it's not enough to turn it off. It still stays loaded and blocks access. There's a known bug in Ashampoo that prevents the popups from being displayed for services that don't have the "Interact with desktop" flag set (such as the avast service).
