Avast! Free AV 181.00 MB!
« on: June 29, 2010, 02:55:37 PM »
In Add/Remove Programs.  Is that not way too many MB?

When I installed Avast! a few weeks ago I remember it not being as high MB as it is showing now.

Please advise if 181 MB is normal or not.  If not, what needs to be done to correct it?

Thank you.

BTW: I removed all info a few days ago in the 2 files noted below:

aswAr1 (log) and setup (log) in Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast\log

Windows XP Home, SP3

Sorry, forgot to add that this very morning, there was a program update to 5.0594 but the 181.00 MB were already showing prior to the update.

It's normal. It includes the logs, the Quarantine, the virus definitions.
You can disable the self defense module and delete all the contents of that folder (logs and dumps).

I suppose the self defense module is located under Settings>Troubleshooting where the box is ticked under enable avast! self defense module?

But where can I find that ( to be emptied) folder you're talking about and what is the name of the folder?

Thank you Tech.

PS: I have under Maintenance: delete scan logs @ 7 days. temporary scan logs older than 1 day and maximum size of each log file 128kb.

Yes.

You've posted it before: Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast\log

Well... this is the automatic cleanup. I think it's all you need.

Think I've got it now.  Cleaned up some files again and wouldn't you know it, the MB shown in the Add/Remove Programs are down to 129 MB from earlier today of 181 MB.

So Avast! acts like a yo-yo in the Add/Remove Programs, adding MB over time automatically and deleting MB when one deletes info.  :)  Never seen that with any other software yet.

Thank you Tech!!

The size will fluctuate as whenever a new VPS (virus definitions) update is done a new folder related to that VPS version number is created, e.g. 1006290 for today, at that point there would still be the previous 1006280 (and possibly 1006281) folders, see image. These are almost identical in size and will remain for a while intil avast does some house keeping removing the older VPS folders.

Got it DavidR.  Thank you!!

As far as I understand, I had 2 updates today:  1) 10062900 and 2) 10062901. (yymmddxx)  Correct?  These are the only 2 showing.

Therefore I surmise that it must have been Avast! that did the cleanup of any previous updates that made such a big difference in MB?  Can't imagine that the 2 (small) files I cleaned up would have been 52 MB.

Cool!!

Yes that is correct two updates today (usual number) and the format is correct yymmddxx with xx being the number of updates in a day 00 - 99 (generally you will only see 00 or 01).

Yes avast does the cleanup automatically as there will be a period of transition where the last and new virus definitions folders will be present. I have just manually updated to 100629-1 so I currently have three folders, which after a while will be pruned by avast. I have no idea what the time frame or trigger is to do the cleanup.

Once again DavidR, thank you for your excellent explanations.

I'm learning a lot about Avast! and love it.  In all likelyhood I may have some other questions in the future.

Downloaded MSE for a tryout a little while ago but came back (ran back) to Avast!.  :)
