Click on the 'a' blue icon on system tray.
Choose the provider that you want to start (resident protection) at left.
Click on Start and check to 'persist' the changes for the future.

If you do not 'have' the 'a' blue icon on system tray, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=3542;start=0

I do not have the a or i icons in my system tray. They have disappeared following a visit to PC World and some trials there this morning to sort out another problem. Can someone advise how to get these icons back.

This is a topic from 2004...
Which avast version are you using?

Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP, Vista, 7?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

I was using version 4.8 but have now downloaded version 5.0.
Using Windows XP.
Yes I can and have rebboted etc to no avail. However I have not rebooted yet since downloading Avast 5.0 so will do so.

Raycarr, Please start a new thread for your post instead of using one that started 6 years ago.  Thank you.

OK.No need to start new thread as problem is now solved.I had upgraded from 4.8 to 5.0 but obviously the upgrade didn't work. I then removed 4.8 and downloaded a new 5.0 and I now have an icon (orange this time) and everything seems to be working.
