« on: July 23, 2004, 04:45:03 PM »
hello all, just installed the Avast4.1 and it looks good, but have a cple of questions plz,
#1, Since I DO NOT USE my outlook express,(ie SMPT,POP) server for my email, WILL AVAST still ck & scan, protect my yahoo/hotmail emails from virus??
or is there something i have to setup,??
2, I 'notice when i open or download a prigram, the little blue globe,(down by clock) starts rotating, what is this doing when it starts running??
3, DOES AVAST automaticall have a boot up scan, I do not see anything when rebooting that shows me the virus scan is scanning at bootup...
thank u for the help & take care ok,"AA"

At the moment avast does not scan yahoo/hotmail accounts, it can only scan SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 protocols.

I belive it is checking the program for viruses/scripts.

Boot up scan is only available on Win2000 and WinXP.

avast! in fact DOES scan your webmail based mail. Its scanned by Standard Shield when you view mails in your browser.

Yes,when the ball is rotating, avast! is scanning files/mails.
This way you always know you are protected.

You probably mean the boot-scan introduced on Win9x platforms (like Nortons boot scan). No,avast! doesn't offer such scan capability.
Its actually not necessary. But it can perform full system scan at boot-time on Windows 2000/XP based systems. It basically scans the disk the same way as On-Demand,but with certain limitations (cannot check compressed archives) and benefits (no influence by resident viruses).
You need to manually schedule this via dropdown menu in Simple Interface.

RejZor are you sure it scans hotmail? i have always been told it can't, since when has it been able to?

EDIT: i no it can scan webmail such as my ISP mail, but i am not sure it can scan Hotmail, i have tryed in the past.

It can. In fact it can scan practically any web based mails. Every page you view is stored locally in cache (including attachements you decide to download).
All this is covered by Standard Shield. There are certain limitations with SSL encrypted connections which doesnt cache anything due to security precoutions, but downloaded attachements are always stored as normal files which are again scanned by Standard Shield.

Rejzor in not trying to second guess you, but i did some research on this and the free hotmail is HTTP protocal, but the payed hotmail is pop3/smtp, but apparently if you get MSN plus (free) you can change your mail to pop3.

Am i not getting something here, or can avast in fact scan HTTP protocals now?

No. Webpages are cached on disk when viewed. This way Standard Shield can check them. Technically there is no risk except that you cannot use Internet Mail/MS Outlook mail heuristics nad other things that strictly rely on POP/SMTP/IMAP protocol.

Hi all,

NOD32 beta is out now it's introduced new feature in HTTP scanning via IMON and implement with notorious NOD32 advanced heuristics. It looks good and revolutionary.

What do you guys think about this?
Is it necessary to modern antivirus?
What is really benefit of this feature?

Thanks

Well it rather say evolutionar then revolutionar ;D
Packers support was introduced now,but avast! supports in for a long time now. Advanced heuristics are fine, but HTTP has certain problems (for now).
In general i count all this as very nice improvement. NOD32 still have huge problems with removing certain malware (doesn't do anything no matter what you select to do with the file)...

He still has IE6,hes just not using it. I do the same. If you don't use IE its the same like you don't have it there. I never really had any problems.

I was only trying to point out the fact that you still need the program. without it, you would have to get your updates from somewhere else.

"Bob, the way i updated window, (maybe I didn't explain correctly) i did an FDISK on computer then after taking all the garbage & un wanted items-ie outlook exoress, money, works 2000, ect) from win98se, then I went to windows update site, updated I,E,5.5,(REJ no use IE6.1) then after updates i set up the "'catolog" and downloaded all past 7 presant patch's,updates for win98se,,and INLY USE ie when I HAVE TO but use Ioera as my main browser,,also just a note IF I UNDERSTAND correctly I just refistered this home version,(4.1) & company says i will get 14 months of free updates, but watching the "'little blue globe in action when i open my yahoo mail, tells me AVAST is scanning, everything WORKING GREAT,so i think i'll give my 3 norton cd's,(2003)to my neighbor,

he tried & found out last month ONE THING YOU SHOULD NOT DO with a cd is "'bend it in half till it snaps"" i laughed on the ground for 3 days, says he was picking plastic out of "'his backside"', the couch, chairs, carpet for a week, but i'll never go back to Norton if i don't have to,,,,"AA55us"

Hehe the trick of bending CD's is that foil inside the CD. I breaked one CD once and i had that foil all over my room. And its even impossible to wipe it since it literally sticks to the surface. So remember, never break the CD's ;D
