ardvark, Revo is NOT good for applications that need to boot on uninstalling or, at least, NOT good for uninstalling antivirus and firewalls.
Just my personal experience.

Hi Tech...

Thank you for sharing that with along with the explanation to GloobyGoob, I wasn't aware of that. :)

ardvark,
That was the main reason for my original post. Use the tools designed specifically for a certain task not
a general "do all things for all programs" tool. They do not always work and can sometimes cause serious problems.

Hi Bob...

Gotcha! :)

And thank you, I wasn't exactly quick on the draw with that one. ;)

I have tried several times completely un-installing and reinstalling, rebooting at the appropriate time, using the clean un-install tool etc. etc. but after each install everything is fine until I reboot again after which none of the avast services will start (they report error 1068) and the system freezes. The only way to fix is to reboot into safe mode and un-install Avast.

The problem is on my desktop, I have Avast installed and working fine on 2 laptops, one with XP and the other with W2k. It is obviously a compatability problem with something I have installed on my desktop I guess but I don't have time to play around any longer so sad to say I got rid of Avast and am using AVG instead which is working fine.

If anybody can tell me what sort of diagnostics I would need to supply to get this fixed and as long as it's not to time consuming I will be happy to provide it. There is nothing obvious, event logs look fine and I can't find any log files with anything useful in the Avast folders.

Thanks all for your comments

Do you still have ZA on the desktop?  What FW and security software do you have on this PC?

Have you run an on-demand scanner like free MBAM http://www.malwarebytes.org/on this PC?

I am also having the same problem with avast.  It won't let me upgrade. I have been using the free version since March with no problems and automatic updating working.

I am registered and my computer time is correct.  I am running Windows XP professional and have plenty of room on my hard drive.  I have also run CCleaner recently.

I successfully upgraded the desktop, but the on the laptop I keep getting error codes when updating.

I did have a virus--I used safe mode and ran malewarebytes and super antispyware from safe mode.  I uninstalled and re-installed avast from safe mode.  It wouldn't let me run avast from safe mode, either.

I am going crazy and wondering if the virus is still there and affecting the avast.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome jthomas34,

First let me ask you if you what other security software you have your machine including the version of Avast, firewall (FW), and any other security software?

If I understand correctly, you have 2 machines (desktop and a laptop).  Is it the XP-Pro with the problem or is there a different OS with a problem?  If the other machine has different specs., please give them to me.

You mentioned that you are getting error codes when trying to update on the laptop.  What is the FW on the laptop and is the FW blocking anything for Avast?

You mentioned that you found a virus.  Which machine was this on and were you able to quarantine or remove the virus?  What was the virus?  Sometimes, a virus will prevent you from installing AV software.  On the other hand, remnants (perhaps prior version of Avast) from security software will also do the same.

For uninstalling and doing a CLEAN install of Avast, did you follow the procedure I posted in this thread?

Since you had a virus, I recommend that you start a new thread under the forum of Virus and Worms if your virus was not removed and there are people there who deal with virus removal.  If the virus was removed, you can start a new thread under Avast 4.0/5.0 Free/Pro and include this thread as a link to your new post.  Thank you.
