Error Message Avast.setup during update
« on: June 28, 2010, 04:50:05 PM »
Hi, i am using AVAST 5 and every now and then during updating I will get an error message coming up

Application popup: avast.setup - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00473864" referenced memory at "0xxxxxxxxx". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

(The nr at ref. memory is always different.)

I already removed and reinstall the program and I am even running now the Beta version v 5.0.590 (but no change)

Thanks in advance
Mike

Running XP Sp3

So, this message (the number 0x00473864 in particular) is from build 5.0.590 already, or from a previous version?
Can you give an example of the memory address (even though it's changing)?
Thanks.

Hi,

Before I had the same problem with the "official build", and I thought maybe the Beta Build 590 will not show the error,
but it's still there.

Here here a couple: always from "0x00473864"

referenced memory at "0x0124d458"
referenced memory at "0x00fed618"
referenced memory at "0x012a746c"
referenced memory at "0x01047ca4"

This morning after upgrading to 5.0.594, the error message changed.

Application popup: avast.setup - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00474114" referenced memory at "0x01010bf8". The memory could not be "read".

So the instruction has changed from "0x00473864" to "0x00474114"

No I am not running any other AV (Used to have AVG, but removed it long ago in favor of AVAST) , and at the moment even using Windows Firewall.

Unfortunatelly, the address corresponds to a commonly used runtime function... we'd need to find out where it was called from.
Please try the following:
1. Disable avast! self-defense (Settings / Troubleshooting)
2. Open the file <avast5>\Setup\Setup.ini
3. Append the following two lines at the end:
[BufferLog]
Enable=1

Then try the update again - and when it crashes, get the file SetupDbg.log from the Setup folder (not setup.log) and upload it to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming
It won't tell us exactly what happend, but it should narrow the possible range at least...
Thanks.

I've added the two lines in setup.ini. I will let you know when I have uploaded the file

I've uploaded the setupdbg.log as mikenl_setupdb.log

The error was:

pplication popup: avast.setup - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00474114" referenced memory at "0x00f54b60". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

In my temp dir I also found a aswupdsum.ini with the following contents
[UpdateSummary]
UpdateStartTime=24887890
SetupOld=594
PrgOld=594
VPSOld=268840960
LastError=-1073741819
