If you go to Basic Settings there is a box to tick labelled "Animate the icon when scanning". Am I misunderstanding this?

yes you do, although this could be formulated more clearly. That concerns the shields exclusively. The icon animation for on demand scans has been requested tens of times since Avast5 came out, it's just supposed to happen...one day. Probably with 5.1
