Avast 5.0594 Slow Startup
« on: July 14, 2010, 04:07:37 PM »
I'm currently using Windows XP SP3 with Avast 5.0594. Since I installed Avast, my start up has gotten slower. It used to stay at the welcome screen for 10-15 seconds and after my desktop loaded, the Avast icon would have an exclamation mark on it for 2 seconds, then it would be loaded. But recently, the welcome screen stays for 20-25 seconds and Avast starts with an red X icon and takes 5-10 seconds before its ready. Any help here?

Install "Soluto" and see what loads and slows bootup

Get it from http://www.soluto.com/

Which other security related programs are running on your system..?

Soluto failed to analyze my boot 3 times and I couldn't gather the results.

I believe the only security tools I use are Windows Firewall and Avast. And super antispyware and malwarebytes antimalware for malware removal.

Seems you have a problem... I never saw a Soluto error.
Which is the error message?
It has a forum and you can also get help with their email support.

It says "Soluto failed to analyze most recent boot" I've read their forums and "Soluto failed to analyze most recent boot" is the most common error with 35 people. I have already sent them an email

Hope they could help you solve this.
But, look, in your first post you've said delays of 10-15 or 20-25 seconds... I see this is perfect normal...

Staying at the welcome screen for 20-25 seconds is normal? I thought that everything was supposed to load after the welcome screen  ???

Try setting the avast services to load after other Windows ones (Troubleshooting tab of settings).

My bootup was also slow with ver 5.0594. I read some reviews about http://www.soluto.com/ on some other sites and decided not to install it. I have the install files for some previous versions so I decided to try that next. So I rolled back to 5.0.545 but it had the same problem. So then I rolled back to 4.8.1368 and now my boot up is quick again. But now I get a pop-up message stating that 4.8 is obsolete or something like that. I'll probably stick with 4.8 for now until the next update ... hopefully it will be fixed then.

Cecil.

Hi Cecil,

You cannot roll back to a prior version, you need to uninstall it and do a clean install, which I will give you the directions in a moment.  Remnants of other versions (4.0 and 5.0) can cause conflicts, which may be why you were seeing your system slowing down.

Version 4.8 will not be supported after the end of this year, so you will continue to see the pop-ups reminding you to upgrade or do a clean install.  Version 5.0.594 is the latest and most stable version.

Doing an uninstall of Avast and CLEAN install[/b] to fix your problems:

1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.594) for the version you need and save it to your HDD:
Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
Pro  –  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
AIS  –  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).  You will need to uninstall BOTH versions of 4.0 and 5.0.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time; turn off your connection from the Internet.
4. Uninstall Avast through "Add/Remove Programs" through Control Panel.
5. Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
6. Reboot twice.
7. Clean your computer up (clean up cache, temporary Internet files, etc.).
8. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.
9. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
10. Register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro or AIS.
11. Reset your settings, if needed.

Hello SafeSurf:

Thanks for the info. I actually did use the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe, during my 'rollback'. My steps weren't as detailed as you've listed though. But I booted into safe mode, ran aswClear5.exe, rebooted into normal mode, installed my older version of avast, then rebooted to see the effect on the boot-time. (I'm running Windows XP Home SP3 by the way). Lots of rebooting, lol.

Yesterday the result of rolling back seemed to be a definite improvement, today however, after a few tries, my boot up was again on the slow side. (So sorry for any misinformation my original post may have caused.) I guess the correct approach, as was suggested earlier in this thread, is to use a boot profiler to first identify the problem. I'll try to play with that when I have some more time.

Best of luck brian890, like you I find slow boots are really annoying.
Cecil.
