Did you already try Tech's suggestion in reply #8...!??
Also consider to defrag your HD...
After trying what Tech and Asyn suggested, you may want to download a free software to clean up your system that many of us use:

CCleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool.  It removes unused files (cache, temporary Internet files, etc.) from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.  It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.  Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

brian, do you happen to also use Perfectdisk ?

In some cases, under XP it did cause slow boot(happened to me), also, please check in  Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer for any errors under Windows logs -> System or System logs, I forget how they are called on XP

Hello Brian:
Just wanted to clarify what worked for you since everyone made lots of suggestions. Are you referring to Tech's suggestion in reply #8? to change "avast services to load after other Windows ones (Troubleshooting tab of settings)." Is that done using the soluto program?

Thanks,
Cecil

Opening the avast user interface is very slow - 30secs to 1min before it opens.  After opening it, clicking on the tabs also sometimes get slow responses that have several secs delay.  I've installed ver 5.0.594 on 3 PCs now, two were program updates, and one was a clean install from web download on a clean install of WinXP.  I have other PCs that use older avast 5 versions that don't have the slow down.  Just seems like the slowdown is a problem with 5.0.594.

It says "Soluto failed to analyze most recent boot" I've read their forums and "Soluto failed to analyze most recent boot" is the most common error with 35 people. I have already sent them an email

Hi Brian,
We'd be happy to help sort things out with Soluto
I've replied to your email on Thursday, please get back to me and we'll continue from there.

Silviu - Thanks for recommending us  :)

Any suggestion to the above, other than waiting for a new version?

@ virus hater,

That doesn't help, as it doesn't seem to be my problem.  I don't have a slow startup problem.  My problem is the user interface is very slow to open.  The "summary" tab is always slow to open.  The other tabs, "scan computer", "real time shield", and "maintenance" always open normally.

Just found out something!!!  When you close the UI and reopen it, it will open the tab that was opened last time.  And since the slowdown seems to be caused by the opening of the "Summary" tab, IF I CLOSE THE UI WHILE THE "SUMMARY" IS NOT OPENED, THERE IS NO SLOWDOWN THE NEXT TIME I OPEN THE UI.

I have duplicated this problem on multiple PCs.  And I had no such problems on older Avast 5 versions.  This is clearly the problem of 5.0.594.

This is a known problem that is being looked at.  I believe in the next release it should be fixed.

There does seem to be a delay with the latest version. My system is similar to the OP's and it used to boot to useable in 55 - 60s; now it's more like 90s.
Avast's Services are set to load after Windows' services and have just defragged the HD (Opera loads in 4 - 5s now  :) ).
Everything else is up and running in about 50s, then Avast keeps the cross and then the ! up to about 80s, then RAM drops down by about 50MB then goes up by about 25MB then slowly starts increasing. This did happen with v4 but much earlier and quicker.
Only other security software starting is Comodo Firewall - Comodo AV isn't even installed.
