Windows 98 Installation ODBC?
« on: July 25, 2004, 05:11:55 PM »
Hello,
Im trying to install Avast! Home Edition on a Windows 98 machine.

When i go to install it says i need the ODBC Drivers or my current ones are corrupted, I assume i just don't have them.

Anyway, i went to windows update and did not find anything,
I went to the Microsoft website and found several things...

My question is:
Which ODBC Drivers do i need to download and install for Avast!?
A link would be awesome.

Thanks!

You should have them since they come with the OS and many applications like MS-Office. I think corrupt drivers before not having them. Try this:

start > run > sfc

Let is scan the systemfiles and replace all changed files. Keep your windows98 cd ready. Reboot after the scan is finished.

If that fails, reinstall (repair) the MS-Office installation if you have it installed.

Well,
I did a fresh install of Windows 98 and i don't have MS Office.

I know i don't have any problems with this on a fresh 98SE Machine.

I've installed various drivers and updates since the 98 install, if i do sfc "replace changed files" will i need to reinstall them?

No, sfc (system file checker) searches for altered system files and will leave the rest alone.

Checking for updates once a week should already be a standard procedure for everyone. With 98 it is not very likely that it changes a lot of system files.

And I just remembered. He can first try to change the odbc to xml storage to see if that works.

Isn't easier to just flip the switch in AEC to XML mode?

Going from odbc to xml will likely make Avast work, but this is a clean install of the OS and very likely with a faulty/no odbc it will give problems for other applications also.

Romeo2k, try the switch from odbc to xml. See if that makes Avast work properly.

If the switching doesn't work try the mdac package from Microsoft

Well i get the popup message about odbc when i try to install avast, it looks like i can proceed anyway but i figure i would just try and get eberything worked out first.

im pretty sure i don't have the ODBC drivers on windows98 still even though it seems odd.

i did SFC and nothing came up corrupted.

on another machine with 98 + se upgrade, i did a search for "ODBC" and it came up with a few files.
i did the same on the windows98 machine and no files were found.

The mdac package looks like it should work, but do i need everything else that's on it?
im trying to keep this system clean and junk free.

Thanks!!!

MDAC (Microsoft Distributed Access Components) is what you need.
But, did you try changing the ODBC to XML into avast4.ini file? It should work too and you won't need MDAC I suppose...).
