OK DavidR and Tech, I'll see if I can do it. Thanks to you both.  :)

OK I successfully changed the delay to 60 seconds. Now my Outpost Firewall just finishes loading and then Avast! begins to load. I haven't timed it yet but it's about a minute. Thanks again.  :)

You're welcome, you could extend that delay if it still effects the normal boot.

Quite possibly nothing to do with it, but I couldn`t help noticing the similarity to my own problem ... excessively slow loading of XP Sp3 that began very recently.

It`s not Avast, though, but wuauclt. exe, the Ms Auto-Update running for an unusally long time (memory use but not CPU in Task Manager) and making the computer unusable for anything up to 40 mins depending on how many MS programs you have.

This problem seems to have arrived with KB2286198, part of the 5th August update.

The workaround is to switch from Microsoft Updates to Windows updates as suggested here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/ef18ff87-db7f-4705-8105-33dcf9a9a03b/#44e80262-9a91-4ddb-9770-63810962cb8c

Worth checking out, anyway.
Thanks for the heads up. I wondered what was going on! I switched to Windows updates and solved that problem.  8)

You`re welcome.

It looks as if this Windows Auto-Update thing (wuauclt.exe) has been causing a lot of trouble for XP Sp3 users, especially if they have average spec machines with not much spare RAM.

I don`t know whether Ms intends to issue a fix for it or not. Wait and see, perhaps?

Just checked the link in Ms Social Answers and found this update from PA Bear MS MVP:

Update: Due primarily to exchanges with several MS MVPS on the behalf of users like you, Microsoft is aware of and has acknowledged the issue:

"We have gotten reports from multiple sources and consider this to be a live service issue and we are investigating it as a Priority 1."

There`s hope for XP users yet, then  ::)
