Unknown Virus
« on: July 27, 2004, 10:13:04 PM »
 ???
We appear to have a virus, which appeared 26 july 04. It prevents access to the internet, freezes the computer and turns the screen light blue (not the blue screen of death as there is no writing and the colour is paler). the only option once this has happened is to restart the computer.

We have up-to-date avast home software which doesnt find a virus, we have disabled system restore, and have downloaded a specific mydoom remover from microsoft which does not find anything either.

does anyone have any ideas?

Paul  :)

Hi Paul,

please read "VirusRemoval" below and
- maybe try some of the tools there (AD-Aware, Spybot, ESCAN ...)
- post a hijackthis-Log here ;)

Use tools if possible in SafeMode (F8-Boot)

there also may be a possiblility (ok i cant spell) that it may not be a virus, it could be other OS related problems

you should run a scandisk/checkdisk an allow it to fix an broken stuff

even if this doesnt solve your problem (which it prob wont), its always a good idea to run this once in a while

If you have vps 431-1 Avast will detect the latest Mydoom (Mydoom.M)
If not, that can be it.

If you have it chekc the event log and the system log if you are running XP for errors.

thanks for all the replies. sorry for not getting back but virus prevents internet access.

a spyware program has discovered a registry key corruption (DSO Exploit) but it cannot fix it, or it keeps coming back.

I have tried windows ScanReg self fix, no good.

The spyware is found in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\windows\current version\internet settings\Z

and we are running Windows ME

Can anybody help with a method of fixing the problem (in layman's terms please!)

(DSO Exploit)
Hi,

if this was SPYBOT S&D:
This is a BUG in SPYBOT; read in their support-forum, e.g.:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=17159

it is most probably NOT the cause for your mentioned problems.
Please post the Hijack-Log and use the above tools ;)

Disable system restore, then fix it.
