I'm stumped now. I thought it was a simple fix since I had the same problem installing on Vista but it seems that you have other issues now. I'll have to leave it to those better equipped to help.

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories. Right Click the 'Command Prompt' item and click the 'Run As Administrator' option.

In the Command Prompt window, Paste the following command.

REGSVR32 %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

Press ENTER.

You should see a popup that says the command succeeded.

Exit the command prompt and try Windows Update again.

Try this

tried to install the redistributable once again, still the same trouble, same with avast!... avast! installs, but i can't open it (same old side by side thing)...

ugh. it's been 2 days. help me, please...

post script.... my apologies for any brusqueness/rudeness on my part. this rather frustrating, as i've had my laptop for over a year and this is the first obstacle i've run across that wasn't easily cleared up. :-\

Do you have the C++2005 redistributable installed?

Are you trying to install the C++2008 SP1 redistibutable? You may have to install just the regular one before you can install the SP1 which is an update.
