Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Uninstalled and re-installed it and no problem.  I assume it was because of a couple of hardware locks I gave myself this afternoon playing with a graphics card.

Thanks!

You're welcome.

Hard to say if it would be related to hardware locks unless it caused some corruption that also effected the repair function.  The main thing is that you now have it running.

Uh.

Happened again.

Also been getting auto hardware reset right after os logs on, on cold boot.  About the time that the AV would start.

uninstalled avast and am using avira for now.  Problems went away.

Don't know if you have a problem or this is circumstantial - I could buy either.....
