What version of Avast do you have?
What product do you have (Free, Pro, AIS)?
How are you trying to register it...online or off-line?

I was using 4, but it has deregistered itself at random intervals over the past year despite me having completed the website registration process and getting a 1yr valid serial number emailed to me. What has caused this, is it because I used the same serial number on 3 of my computers?
I've installed version 5 on my son's laptop, and created a brand new registration because it wouldn't allow him to reactivate the expired registration. Also, the Avast protection was automatically deactivated on his laptop when the 1yr registration expired, so it quickly acquired several dangerous virus infections which disabled Avast altogether. This has prevented any further warnings or alerts for the past few months, and left his laptop open to attacks. What should I do to make sure this cannot happen again if he can't reactivate his registration online?

You did not mention in your post what Avast product you are using (Free, Pro, AIS)?

Here is how to obtain a license and/or register your Avast product:

Free:
On-line registration is very simple and it's the preferred method for all users of Avast Free Antivirus 5.0 installed on a computer with standard Internet connectivity. To perform on-line registration, follow these steps:

Pro:
How to register avast 5 pro on page 7 - 8

AIS:
Once you have purchased Avast Internet Security 5.0, you will receive an email with your license file attached to the email address specified during the purchase process.  You need to have Avast Internet Security 5.0 already installed on your machine to insert the license file into the program according these instructions:

Converting Avast 4 Pro License Key to 5 Pro License File:

Make sure you use the same email as you used to register for the 4.0 license.

Registered with a 1 year license for the free version, as above

The online re-registration process failed for some reason so my son's PC was left unprotected, and Avast was then partially disabled by a virus and no further security warnings were given. Is there something I can do to ensure that this never happens again?

Yes, make sure that it registers immediately upon installing or upon expiration.  If the online registration failed, then you should have done the alternative off-line registration to avoid the problem you faced.

In addition, Free users of 5.0 get a warning of expiration 14 days prior to the actual expiration date.  Look at the GUI Summary/Main page and you will see the expiration date.  If you don't see it, it didn't take and you need to do something about it.

Carefully monitor the Avast icon in the bottom toolbar.  If you see a red "X" or a yellow "!" or yellow triangle, something is wrong and you need to open the GUI to investigate what the problem is...it will usually tell you on the Summary page.  These are simple steps to take to avoid having future problems.
