Avast and PC performance
« on: July 29, 2004, 01:49:53 AM »
Hello,

I like Avast but it's slowing my pc. I've been testing the pro version and need to decide on it in the next couple of day's.

I'm running an 800 celeron with XP and 384MB ram.

Can you help me with this?

Thanks

Hmmm ... perhaps it is not avast but maybe that installing avast! caused you to reach the limits of being fast for your computer.   :(

How many programs run at start-up? It could be that you need more ram? I have 640 mb of ram running W98SE with 9 icons on the task bar ... not to mention what else is running. I experienced no computer slow down after installing avast!    :D

So, check and see if you can do with less programs automatically starting at start-up. I hope this helps you.    :)

Depending on what other software you load at boot time and what applications you use and what the settings are etc, 384 on a 800mhz with XP is very low. I personally have never seen Avast slowing down a system and trust me, I've seen many systems. Two things you can do are:

1) prevent applications loading at boot time that are not really needed for the system to work. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

2) 'Tweak' you system. Disable all services not needed etc. www.blackviper.com

Besides what the others asked you, can you post:
Which firewall are you using and if you have any other antivirus installed in your system?

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, I've been away.

My processes are stripped down. Probably half a dozen not needed on this machine.  Also, I do use a program called Start Up cpl (by Mike Lin ) to stop apps from loading at start up.

I use Zone Alarm 4.5 as firewall and have no other Anti-Virus app installed.

Standard Shield was set to High, then custom with several file extensions added ( found this on a post , maybe one of Technical's) and finally just set to normal.  It seems that everything I do on this machine is scanned first.  I'm not sure if thats good or bad.

Well, more secure but slow down...

Don't believe in everything you read from me  ;D
Well, if you can let the security on normal (when you are off-line for instance), it'll be fast.
