Woohoo! Thanks for the link to those drivers - my monitor speakers are working and I even have a fancy GUI to make all special sound effects

Headphones still dead, but will keep working on that.

Not quite sure what happened to cause the error in the first place - and I certainly have never had these drivers in the past - but I can hear again now

Glad it worked. Windows update frequently offers driver updates and I have found that it's not always a good thing to install them, especially on laptops or for integrated video and sound cards. Maybe you had installed a driver from there or for some reason were using the default windows generic drivers. Whatever the case, I'm glad it worked.
