Been getting fake emails from UPS, social security, etc, that I know have infected attachments as zip files. Avast's email shield is ON, but ignores these attachments. I know Avast can check zipped files and will flag these attachments if I separate them and look at them manually. Would be nice to just do it as part of the email shield,

Is this a settings issue or Avast simply doesn't work with Thunderbird?

Check the mailshield settings

open avast > Real-Time Shields > Mail Shield > Expert Settings > Packers > All Packers (default)

you can also upload the file to www.virustotal.com and have it tested by 42 virus scanners
when you have the result, copy the URL in the addressbar and post it here
if avast does not detect, send the file to virus@avast.com in a password protected zip.file
and write the passord in the mail
