Scott do you have a wireless home network? If so you could spend a little bit of cash to link surveillance cameras up to it. There are lots of people interested in the same thing. Like checking to see who is at the door and such. You could go cheap or go big really depends on what you need it for!
Avast! free antivirus (scans your computer, emails, IMs, webpages in real time) and ZoneAlarm/Comodo (manages the permissions of your internet activity) firewall should be fine for your computer security needs.
