RESOLVED!!!-can´t install avast or scan the computer with any AV

Hello!
well, I´m very happy to say that this problem seems to be resolved. I did the Windows XP repair and now the computer is up and working.
But , I did need  the original CD that came  with  the computer. I tried first with my brother in laws copy and when it asked for the product key it did not accept the one the computer came with, it said it did not match the CD´s.
And it just stayed stuck there so  thank God after looking everywhere I found the original CD. Turned off the computer and installed it, no problem then. I installed about 200 updates including SP3 so I don´t think there will be a problem...It seems to work fine... plus everything I had on the computer before, emails, AV´s, pictures , etc.., is still there  ;D 
So many, many thanks to all of you who so kindly offered your help, advice and time, you are really wonderful people, specially you Essexboy...
It´s a great feeling after all these hours spent on this issue, to be able to get the computer back to normal again.
 And I learned a lot in the process...
