Avast 5 problem with Outlook 2010
« on: August 09, 2010, 08:20:40 PM »
Hi guys,

I have updated from WinXP SP2-Avast 4.8-Outlook Express to Windows 7-Avast 5.0.594-Outlook 2010 and the main problem i'm facing is that i cant send-receive emails unless i turn Avast Email Shield OFF.
This is the message im getting: -ERR Cannot establish SSL with POP server 200.45.191.2:99
I have already read other topics about default ports 110 and 25 and i dont have SSL working in Outlook so i wonder what the problem could be.

Configuration:
- Windows Seven Ultimate x32 (Clean Install)
- Office 2010 (Clean Install)
- Avast free edition 5.0.594 (Clean Install)

Thanks

IF you go to the Expert Settings button at the middle-right towards the top of the Mail Shield.  There is an option for SSL accounts you can add them in manually that should help.  Hope that helps.

Edit:  There is an option in Avast! 5 that should detect/alert SSL IMAP/POP3/SMTP connections automatically and request to be added.  If that has been unchecked it could explain why you are having trouble.  The option is in the same place you add these servers.  Since you can send mail with the shield off try adjusting the settings in Expert Settings and it should resolve your issue.  It sounds like it is trying to connect with SSL for whatever reason.  I'm not sure try reviewing the Outlook settings again just to double-check.

Well based only on your IP address in the error "-ERR Cannot establish SSL with POP server 200.45.191.2:99" you are trying to connect to port 99, that is the port behind the : colon.

avast is only monitoring certain ports and port 99 isn't one of them, port 25, 110, 119 and 145 for non-SSL communication and the usual SSL/TLS ports.

I don't know if your email client account settings determines you use port 99 for secure POP3 connections or that is what your ISP says must be used ?

But as has been mentioned the email client account settings has to have SSL disabled or avast can't monitor it (assuming the issue I mentioned about port 99 isn't an issue) then avast would determine if the connection to port 99 should be secure.

I'm posting now a new message with a Windows Mail error, almost the same one i got from Outlook 2010. Seems i can only send but no receive emails. I repeat that SSL is disabled and here is an attachment with a pic.

Well again I'm asking questions about the port being used, as port 995 is an SSL port, which you didn't answer last time about port 99, presumably this was an error and should have been port 995.

So is this the port you have set in your email program account settings for pop3 connections ?
The normal pop3 port is 110.

If you set the account to use an SSL port then avast would try to connect using the SSL protocol.

We ask questions to bet a better understanding of the problem, if you don't answer them we haven't the information to help.

First of all thank you very much for your answer, sorry about the port question but as my english is not very good i didn't understand what you were asking. Port setings are 110 for pop3 and 25 for smtp with SSL disabled as you can see in second attached pic.
In the first one: "SMTP server require autentication" set by my adsl provider (if it is of any help).
I don't really have a clue about the reason Outlook is trying to conect to port 995, if the ports are already configured in Advanced Count Settings.
If you have any other suggestion or question let me know. Thanks very much.

One of my problems is that I don't use MS Outlook, so I'm not familiar with its settings and obviously the language difference.

But I think the Outlook account settings are correct.

Try opening the avast Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL accounts section and delete the entries for the accounts that aren't working and reboot. It should reset them to your Outlook account settings.

Or you can change Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL accounts, Port number to match that of your Outlook accounts and set Encryption to None if they don't require secure connection.

Hello DavidR, as you said i deleted the entries for the accounts in Mail Shield - Expert Settings and rebooted and that seemed to be the solution to the problem. At the moment i can send and receive emails in Outlook again. Thanks very much for your help.
